Heya everyone, I am currently looking for a graphics card which will be a massive upgrade from my integrated radeon :D gonna be playing all games really at 1920x1080, which one should I purchase? any experiences with either of these cards?

Depends on what games you're playing and if you consider going Crossfire/SLI. There's about 7% difference between the two, GeForce 470 being faster at stock. I would imagine these differences being non-existent when comparing overclocked cards.

Radeon 5850 can be had for £195 elsewhere, just saying.

Take into consideration the factors which puts lots of people off, the heat and power draw.

Im looking at the Zotac GTX 470 or the cheap HIS 5870....

It really is hard to tell which is better!

The 5870 over all probably is, but I get the impression the GTX 470, has more in the tank when it comes to DX11

Don't buy it on the strength of dx11, no card really is worth that atm. The next gen of dx11 cards are the ones to look at for that, there'll be more games available, too. :p

470, seeing as it can beat the 5870 when both are overclocked and has smoother gameplay any way

Considering how hot I hear the gtx 470 runs, I think overcloking is out the window.

I wouldnt mind buying an Nvidia card, in fact I think this round I wouldnt mind doing so, its just Im not sure if the GTX 470 actually is competative against the 5870.

Really hard to see from benchmarks, as you'v got old benchmarks with the old drivers, then you'v got difference between the benchmark sites them selves etc etc etc

I ordered a Zotac GTX470 today, mad not to at £234

the newer 256 series drivers have really helped with performance.

Have you seen the 470 running in real life?

Did you choose that over a 5870?

People keep saying the new drivers really help, but have you seen this with your own eyes?

If Some one could tell me if the GTX 470 was closer to the 5870 rather than the 5850, then Id buy it, but when I can get a 5870 for 275... it hard justifying the saving on the GTX.

So you mean you choose the Zotac over a 5850?

Im looking at the Zotac GTX 470 at 235 vs the HIS 5870 at 275!

The £40 saving is not a consideration, I just wantthe best card.

It will also burn your house down and the fan at 100 percent trying to cool it will create a twister in your room. On a serious note though gtx470/480 need watercooled to get the best of both worlds where as ati 5 series can happily be overclocked with none of the drawbacks that fermi has. This smoother gameplay you talk of is also rubbish and i am not sure where you get this from. the last review i read used fraps to show that in games not game benchmarks as most reviews use a 5850 had better minimum frames when comparing to a gtx470 which imo would relate to smooth gameplay.

that review is around a month old or more i think so things may have moved on.

yeah sure, that's why I'm running a stock cooled 470 with a 33% overclock with max fan speed at 75% and max temp at 78C no matter what game I play. Need proof? I'll get it if you ask

Smoother game play is a well known fact of the 470 vs 5870 battle, ask any one who compared them. And any respectable review site put the 470 with minimums around 5870 level, rarely going below and usually above
