Has anyone else got this mail.

Steam sent me a mail saying they banned me in error and have neo given me 2 free games for myself L4d2 etc aswell as a copy of each game i get a second copy to give to my friends as a gift.

I logged in and wallah 2 free games 2 free gifts LOL!!!

Anyone else got this,

Thought I read something similar the other day on here, though I don't recall anything about free games at that point. Must be a significant balls up if free games are being given out.

It appears due to a balls up on certain configurations the official updated version of a dll file looked exactly like a hacked version in memory and once detection for that hacked version went live approx 10 innocent people were banned for every guilty person.

Hence why they are giving out L4D2 by way of an apology.

Nice, heres hoping for a ban :p

while it is great that they come clean about their mistake and try to compensate for it, its clearly an attempt to bolster the dwindling lfd2 population

Or the fact that of all the games they could give away free L4D2 will have the least impact on their wallet for return on customer satisfaction.

Regardless, it's a nice gesture for them to throw in some free games with their apology.

I think this is great customer service on steams part from the sounds of it. They have a balls up, customers complain, steam take it seriously and investigate it (fairly quickly) and compensate pretty generously for what was only a few days down time. I would be interested to know if innocently banned people have lost their progress in the game. That would be a nightmare!

Taken seriously, i think not.

I had a back and forth with customer services each time saying the ban was justified and they had "looked into it".

Just look how rude their mods were on the steam forums.

Manners cost nothing and i doubt i will buy any MP stuff through steam again, or any MP game that uses VAC.

At that point in time though the ban was justified as VAC was picking up on what it thought to be a hack. I doubt customer support deal with the inner workings of VAC and most likely just have standard replies for situations like this and it's not hard to imagine them getting hundreds of e-mails a day saying "OMFGWTFBBQMENOHAXWYBAN!!!!". As for the mods they did seem to come across rude in a lot of cases though that can probably be attributed to them continually having to re-iterate themselves.

VAC generally isn't wrong when it wields the ban hammer so I'd assume they'd place more faith in what VAC is telling them than the customer.

VAC wasn't wrong anyway, it's was doing what it was designed to do, it was valve \ steam that ballsed up by including a dodgy dll.
