Am thinking getting a apple tv for my home made movies and collections of photo to make easier show family of our new born to make easier and poss rentals. Is a new one due to release?

There's rumours of one based on iOS4/ARM being released with 16GB of flash memory. Nothing concrete yet, so don't hold your breath.

Streaming or USB Port for external Hard drive.

If the thing only costs $99 (as rumoured) then 16gb would be seen as plenty.

Hmm not too sure what to do now..... Think i may prefer the current version as have larger inboard storage. Although if the new one to be true guess it be September when Steve prob talk about it?

What would u guys prefer this new one or current version

Well the rumour currently goes like this:

Apple is working on a new, iOS Based, Apple TV. This, along with all other apple devices, will link to some kind of iTunes "In the cloud". What this entails, nobody knows.

Anything of this nature, I imagine, would be announced at their regular September media event. Whether that is this year, or next though, I wouldn't like to guess. Didn't they say something about their new data centre being complete in November? (Quarterly earnings call I think it was)

I'd buy an Apple TV in a flash if it was only $99.

In short, do NOT buy one right now - they are a nice product, but too locked down, too expensive, and apparently about to be replaced by something a LOT cooler :)

I've got a current generation Apple TV and I really like it. It doesn't do much but what it does, it does very well. There's plenty of other HD media streamers out there but none come close when it comes to the responsiveness of the Apple TV's UI.

If this new one does come out at $99, I'll pick up a second one for the bedroom but keep the existing model in the living room.

you could always go down the route of using a MBP/MB if you have one and using plex ??? currently doing this with my imac (my MBP is always on the move) and it gives me the options of using more files of different codecs ie mkv/avi and so on, all thats need is a mini display port to hdmi and a hdmi cable works a treat for me, but if you dont have the hard ware already then its a no go i guess

I have a MBP but when it connected to my tv the whole desktop dcoes not fit on the entire screen and i ave tried different setting i either have to have some cut off or strink someone said apple tv would fill the screen as it design to do that...

Any corrections here?

i believe if you right click on the tv when the mbp is connected you can change the res that way and if have usb audio you just change it to that it the pref pane :)

I bought my ATV unit around last November as I was cheesed off with the lack of good Blu-Ray films, and at the sametime the horrid, animated low menus that every film seems to have. So I figured Apple's Rental collection would serve me well.

The present gen Apple TV is a good bit of kit - for doing what it is supposed to do, which is playback your iTunes media and rentals. It does this incredibly well if that is ALL that you want.

However...

One key thing you need to factor in is the selection of films on iTunes itself. There are certain new films that are newly released and they aren't even in HD, frustrating to say the least. Some new films cannot even be rented full stop, only purchased! It is mostly I believe due to the publishers though, so they effectively control the platform in that regard.

Hacking the ATV unit I would recommend and can easily be undone should you need to. This extends the functionality of the device and allows you to use the rear usb port to attach an external hard disk. The best thing is that XBMC media player is available, which can play every format under the sun - even certain high res films, which stretches that aging Pentium M within the device.

It's onboard hardware however is massively out of date and needs a revamp. It plays back iTunes 'HD' content fine, but throw video recorded at a high bitrate and it'll cry.

A Mac Mini would be a better solution in every way, but it's a lot more.

But won't that display like the mbp does? If you read above with my mbp I can't get it to show on my tv as full screen without losing any of the picture or have black bar round it

There is an "Overscan" option in OS X (System Preferences -> Displays -> Options) which will allow you to see the entire image from your computer if selected, but this may also leave you with a black border around the edge of the screen. Deselecting this option may cause the image to be cropped on the sides.

I have a Mac Mini connected to a 60" Pioneer Kuro without problems, so I can't see a problem. Check out my HTPC thread if you really want to see what's possible. Link in my sig :)
