Been looking for a new phone for a while now and was hoping for some input on which of the three I have picked would be best for genral use Internet browsing, apps, odd bit of gaming, and call quality/reliability, speed of operation etc.

HTC Desire
Iphone 4
Samsung Galaxy S

Internet browsing - Desire/Galaxy S

apps, odd bit of gaming - iPhone 4

call quality/reliability - Desire/Galaxy S

speed of operation - Tie

Factor in prices and make your choice ;)

Value for money says get a Droid, iPhone seems to have a few issues too, for me I preferred the desire, but best have a play in a shop

Thanks for help looked into them some more and the design fault with the iphone 4 antenna has got to be a deal breaker as its not fit for purpose unless you hold it X way, so decided to go contract with the Desire which I just ordered and set up an 18 month contract on.

The iPhone 4 is fit for purpose. I've had no problems with the antenna performance. Don't believe everything that's blown out of all proportion by the press.

iPhone 4, does it all, HD, takes a decent pic, Plays movies for a while longer than the rest, itunes etc etc.

Don't even bother with an iPhone 4 unless you want to fugly it up with bumpers/case. Wait for a revised design that fixes it's massiveho flaws or buy something which you know, does everything it does without issues and costs a fraction of the price.

i have had the iPhone 4 since day of release, in that time i have had TWO issues with the reception, i am still on the OS4, the 4.0.1 does have a software fix to fix the signal issue does it not? so.... that aside, what are these issue you speak of?

There is no software fix at ALL for the design flaw in the iPhone 4

The patch fixed Apples buggy signal bar display but the issue is the bare metal exposed antennae which when bridged de-tunes them and causes huge signal loss and call/data drops.

The official Apple 'fix' was free bumper/case for anyone who bought before a specific date. Oh, and part of the fix was pretending other attenuation 'problems' with other phones which were of a completely different nature was justification for the iPhone 4's problem.

Those in areas where the de-tuning does not cause a significant issue are downplaying the design flaw. Buying a mobile phone that in certain areas is prone to such a major issue on the basis that it is "okay" in some areas is pretty naive.

Do either of you own an iPhone 4?

Standard rebuttal. Refuted because robboftw does (or was it actually the 3GS, I forget).

I do have an iPhone 4 and (still :p) have a 3GS.

If you are not in a strong signal area (or certain areas depending on various factors) you WILL experience this problem.

I actually had two iPhone 4's and they both had the same issues with signal (returned one due to a screen fault), it seems more potent than on any of my other phones. The Desire/N900 for example may drop a bar or two if you 'death grip' it (in a fairly average signal area) but never to the extent the iPhone does.

I know there are a lot of people in the Apple forum saying its all blown out of proportion by the media, but if you lived in an area with a poor signal you would be pretty mad about this having just splashed out £500-600.

If for example, you live in and around a city, you probably won't notice this problem very much.

However, if you live out in the countryside (as millions of people do), and have a fairly average-poor signal, this problem is a pretty big one.

My friend has a iphone is it was really easy to drop the signal on his phone. It was also the same case with all the iphones in my local apple store.

I was Kinda in the same case as the OP, but the iPhone just costed to much for not much improvement, I went for the Galaxy S after trying out that all the phones, the screen was just sold me haha.

Do either of you own an iPhone 4?

Robbo has every mobile ever made... ever :p (+ a lot of people who post in these mobile threads have owned/still own iPhones...)

Here's my take!

Internet browsing - Tie
Desire/Galaxy S: Bigger screens + proper flash.
iPhone: Hi res screen + safari is smooth and very polished.

Apps, odd bit of gaming - Tie
Desire/Galaxy S: I download more apps in the first week on android than in 3 years with the iPhone... widgets, widgets and more widgets = Sexy time :)
iPhone: Simple and easy with everything you could possibly need (exept widgets)

Call quality/reliability - Tie
Desire/Galaxy S: Reliable + good audio quality. Android could have much phone intergration, it only recognises US number types from web/apps + you can't copy/paste numbers into the dialer :(
iPhone: Just as good, get a case if you start dropping the signal? Easy to call numbers from the web/apps etc.

speed of operation - Tie
All have great hardware and operating systems.

Factor in prices and make your choice ;)
