Flying to the USA with KLM and have some internal connections with United. The rules on the hand luggage are kind of confusing, is it ok to take a laptop and a DSLR on the plane in my backpack.

as long as under weight and size limits then yes
If it is KLM - maybe, if it's Delta codeshare then he could probably take a whale on as hand luggage :D. Most apathetic airline ever. I managed to take my suitcase, shoulder bag, laptop case and duty free on as carry on as they didn't care.

SAA are weighing hand luggage now. I've not heard of it happening before but it could catch on, a nice little earner for the airline.

Your laptop usually has a seperate allowance.

not that I have seen, used to be like that but most are 1 item now with overall weight and dimension limits

airlines do vary hugely in terms of hand luggage though

Most US airlines are 1 carry on + 1 smaller item (purse, handbag, laptop, briefcase) in my experience.

I guess this is another area in which the Asian airlines demonstrate how much better they are than everyone else then - on my last flight the Laptop was seperate :)

From my experience with KLM on the short haul hops it depends how crowded the flight is - if its not too busy they tend to be more flexible, if its very full you will be strictly limited to 1 item of the stated size (tho they only seem to bother properly checking actual weight/size if your being awkward or appear to be trying to take advantage of the system). On long haul it can vary quite a lot, I think they rent operational space from other airlines, codeshare, etc. so it can be difficult to predict.

SAA is singapore airlines?
It had got to the point of madness when you'd turn up at heathrow to be confronted by a family chekcing in 1 suitcase ease and then wlaking off carrying an insane amount of heavy luggage all minisuitcases as they know they would never be checked.

Limit is a limit, but I've always been of the opinion that people and luggage should be weighed together if they're going to start charging for fuel costs due to weight.

I have always said they should weigh you and any luggage you want and thats what compared to your "allowance".
If I weigh 10 stone and have a heavy suitcase it will still be a hell of a lot less than some fat ****** with a light suitcase.
Which TBH is what I find most funny about all the weigh in rubbish, they obviously assume an average mix of people, if the whole flight turns up and is a fair bit over weight the plane probably wont be able to take off ;)

I think long haul they always seem to pay more attention and when I have had my hand luggage checked its been then. The cheaper airlines are bad as well tho, cos for them they are always after every single chargeable penny where as the main carriers are more for providing service imo as they want you to use them again.

The size of most hand luggage that people were taking on the plane when I was flying around the USA last week was larger than my checked suitcase.

Most airlines are quite relaxed if the flight isn't packed, I haven't had any issues in the last few months and done a few flights carrying both a bag and a seperate laptop bag.

This was with AirAsia and they have signs everywhere and announcements about their "strict" 1 bag policy - no matter if laptop or not :p

I know the FAA states that airlines create their own carry-on allowance policies but generally a laptop is a separate "free item" alongside your carry-on bag. Never had it different or had an issue with this when flying with any airline.

BA is actually pretty good: "You are allowed one piece of hand baggage plus a laptop or handbag. "

and "Musical instruments may be carried in addition to your stated hand baggage allowance, providing the dimensions do not exceed those of a guitar and providing it can be security screened."

South African Airways
Someone was promoting a "flight jacket" that was literally covered with pockets, I believe you could get 20kg in that if you tried. It looked pretty iffy but if your desperate for some extra weight allowance that could be your option :)
I use a Domke photographers jacket. Put all my small camera bits (batteries, chargers etc. plus inflight entertainment:book, ipod) in the pockets that would otherwise go in the cabin baggage.

Depends on the airline. I've seen it with a few where you get your hand luggage and then you can take a coat, a laptop, baby stuff...
