24-70L broken, what do I do?

:(

The verdict:

DISMANTLE TO REPLACE ZOOM KEY AND GUIDE SET. FULL CHECK AND TEST TO
STANDARD

Repair Cost - £148.00
Carriage/Insurance - £8.00
Sub-Total - £156.00
VAT - £27.30

TOTAL - £183.00

My luck over the last few months has been a joke. I feel like stabbing someone multiple times in the face right now, preferably myself.

If you're going to do something like that, you might as well wait until you get the lens back, so you can take decent photos to document it! :p

I'm such a penis. I should have gone with my instincts. I called Canon and they confirmed that what needs doing will be £102 :( I should have just sent it to them.

These Johnstone people only accept payment by cash or cheque. Sod that. I'm going to get it back from them unrepaired and send it to Canon. It will be cheaper overall to do that, and probably quicker as I won't have to wait for a cheque to clear.

This may sound a little harsh but.......

No. of lens use x potential earnings - cost of repair = stop complaining ;)

Its hard to take a hit like that I know but with the number of events / potential events through word of mouth will outweigh the cost of the repair. So Cheer up Nick its not really that bad :)

You got to write it, include it as the running cost of the business. It's not that bad in the long term, and it will come back sharper!

P.s. Fixation!!!!!! Lol they get my vote.

A. J. Johnstone Ltd are ****ing useless! I told them a week ago that I want my lens back unrepaired and THEY STILL HAVEN'T EVEN POSTED IT!

I need it back, sent to the REAL Canon, repaired, and returned to me at the very least for the 12th September otherwise I'm going to have to hire another one AGAIN!

Avoid the useless ****wits!

I wish I had found this before I sent it to them - http://www.freeindex.co.uk/profile(aj-johnstone-co-ltd)_32163.htm

Having read this thread my suspicions about my 24-70 have been confirmed, it's definitely soft and could do with testing and tweaking, I hadn't ever heard of it before this thread though - never even occured to me!

How many L glass do you have? If you qualify for CPS the turn around time are quicker.

That sounds interesting, can you tell me anything about it, I've not heard of it before, is it with a specific repairer?

I've got 5 L lenses.

Thanks!

Sorry for the thread hijack ScarySquirrel, hope it's getting sorted for you!

2 qualifying bodies and several qualifying lenses. More is available on the CPN/CPS site.

I think you still have to earn some of your imcome from photography too. But I'm not 100% on that one, IIRC it was last time I filled it out?

It's directly with Canon and lenses are sent off to their service centre with a nice little 'CPS' sticker on the box, if you're considered one of their 'special' friends.

I've found that typically lenses take 5 working days to be turned around with 'common' faults where before CPS they were taking up to 14.

Have a peek here for more info.
