Best software to wipe a hdd

yup dans nuke and boots pretty good and free but sometimes doesnt find my sata hdds.

I prefer Acronis true image home it has a section of tools and Acronis disc erase, even using the Full Wipe (fastest) and then running a data recovery software like recovery my files/get data back it doesnt find anything afterwards:)

Like you say it makes data recovery harder but not impossible

Darik's Boot And Nuke

When carrying out forensic work encryption is one of the hardest thing to recover data from

It's impossible to recover any data that has been overwritten.

Agreed - there are theories of data recovery using Magnetic Force Microscopy and perhaps small bits of data could be recovered but this usually on older hard drives that don't have such accurate heads and where disks have not been over written many times.

Using Darik's Boot and Nuke on a modern hard drive you'll have no issues

This is a great post and makes me think of where I can fit in.Killdisk will do the job and your drive manufacturers site will have software to do this as well.DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction.

Just use Truecrypt and set a 10+ Charcter password

I think the mexican police have been trying to get in a guys harddrive for over a year doing all sorts of brute force attacks etc with no luck
