Well, I think it would be best to move it a bit further away just to keep folks happy, its not like the Muslim's are going to be put out by it being in a slightly different place.

you are right they wont but calling it 'the ground zero mosque' when its not is just feeding the backlash

Didnt know our very own warmonger Bliar was involved in the whole 9/11 islamic centre.

Oh yeah he's all in favour of it, and totally disgusted by the plan to burn Qur'ans because it might result in bloodshed. He should know, he is the Middle East Peace Envoy (when he's not promoting his book, building a property empire, sitting on the board of banks and lecturing at privileged US universities).

Good job he's called it off. :)

Now the discussion has moved onto if it's a mosque or not. Hahaha. :D

what?

who said it gave them an excuse?

You're the one saying the west is responsible for provoking attacks when this is in "retaliation" to an attack.

I agree tbh...i dont think its worth the hassle...we muslims have it bad enough in the media without causing more hassle.

Ahh ok i didnt know that he was involved in all this...all ive heard of that idiot is his book signing which went kinda pear shaped in Ireland was it?? then his book being sold at half price:p.

What??...lol sorry im confused Tefal.

The 9/11 attacks gave the extremists an excuse to attack the west after the invasion of Kuwait many yrs ago...along with the americans occupying a few 'muslim' lands...why do you think they attacked the west exactly??.

Not sure if thats what your getting at though so feel free to correct me.

The extremists dont need an excuse.

Well they do in order to justify what they do to their 'followers';) as someone will invariably question them as to why they should carry out such attacks....geez imagine that eh?? a terrorist who has a conscience:p

I hope you aren't speaking from experience there....

I jest, I jest :p

The proposed cultural centre includes a mosque, it is a small part of the scheme but it is there nonethless.

The building has been used for Muslim worship for over a year so the furore now is purely political and driven by media inanity.

The part of Manhattan where the WTC was is very small, wherever you site the cultural centre it wll be used as political fodder by the Christian Right regardless. There is a verifiable need in the area for muslims to worship so as the centre is half a mile from ground zero and is open to all, will promote peace and integration I see no logical reason to resite it or refuse one in lower manhattan. In fact, moving it further away will place it in conflict with the Jewish community on the lower eastside, so if you put aside for one moment media induced hysteria and politcal hyperhole, it's proposal is probably the better option.

When and where did they kill thousands of Americans exactly??

look who's lying

This is incorrect. According to Spawn, there is no mosque there, so stop lying :p

A place for thousands of Muslims to gather and pray is not a mosque anymore because it also has a swimming pool, and mosques dont have those.

(According to Spawn).

just becuase a building has a prayer hall does not make it a mosque

That would normally be applicable to non religious places, but how exactly can you have an Islamic Community Centre built for Muslims with large prayer rooms, and not have a Mosque?

Now I find this incredibly funny:

Ground Zero Mosque locations may be reconsidered, suggest media reports. New York's governor says the imam behind the proposed Islamic community center near ground zero has offered an "opening" with his latest comments about the debate. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf said Wednesday that if he'd known "it would cause this kind of pain," he might have chosen a different location.

So is he really trying to convince everyone that he genuinely had no idea that building an 'Islamic Community Centre including a Mosque' so close to Ground Zero wouldnt cause so much pain? How can anyone buy that excuse, OF COURSE HE KNEW that this project would have caused so much pain.

It doesnt matter now though. We will still have International burn a Koran day and Everybody Draw Mohammed day forever now, finally some fun days for blasphemous atheists to enjoy :)

To be fair to Spawn, and others, the original proposal by the Cordoba Initiative did not include a mosque, simply a contemplation and prayer-room.

The Unit51 project is more ambitious and the mosque was included when the previous provision for Muslim worship in Lower Mannhattan was closed after failing to secure suitable premises.

Either way the provision is needed and there are other constraints to consider, like I mentioned previous.

My two cents on the matter: I'd imagine the vast majority of Muslims can see these people for what they are, the lunatic fringe hell bent on garnering attention for their own warped world view, much like their own extremist element. And those who do carry out an act of terror as a result of Billy-Bob and Bubba-Ray's book burning probably would have probably done so anyway, to avenge some other perceived slight, real, imagined or otherwise.

TLDR: My world (and your's too) is probably going to be unaffected.
