New Website Banners

The point of the banner is to get people to click it and browse the site. Showing a price could be a barrier for a lot of people, and they won't bother clicking.

Yeah but your conversion rate will fall. Depends whether you're paying CPM or CPC really.

Professional work, but some of the banners are not faded properly - particularly the right-hand side. Also are you fading to #000000 black?

Some of them are very nice, some of them kind of make me think 'saw some Apple adverts and just found photoshop'.

Unsure on the liberal use of fading to black / vignetting.

The fading to black has to be in place for site template, or it would be sharp cut edge which looks terrible.. as dicussed earlier, and apple use pure grey / white adverts with reflection - however they always look good and sleek, so if there was an example to follow it would be that.

Generally I think they look very good. The only minor criticism I do have is the "new to OcUK" on the Logitech mouse banner ... the text style of that line looks a bit small and weak to me.

I was just thinking you could perhaps explore a bit further than fading everything. The logitech one for example could work using the image of the mouse to give you an edge if you see what I mean. If it were a little larger so as to touch top and bottom, have solid black to the right of it and use that for your edging. Would work better on certain products than others but the point is really just - experiment. Fading to black isn't the only option.

Quick, dirty mock up of what I mean...

Other idea, maybe use a tear effect on the edges, with the banner looking recessed? That sort of thing is what i'm getting at.

I like them.

I always think 'thats not a 4 series GTX' in the pic though. The XFX one.

Isnt it a 2 series?

You must have an awful monitor.

exactly ;)

also the banner needs to grab attention, not hide items so they fade nicely together as in your suggestion. i obviously can see it but there is simply no contrast what so ever it's no longer eye catching. in your example it's gone from light grey to medium grey to dark grey to black. in the op's example it's gone from dark grey to light grey to black. much better contrast

what mouse? it's faded into the black that you can't now see it  much prefer the way they're being done by the op and think they will provide a uniform way to create other banners. you suggestion would require a new design for every new banner

Faded into the black? I think perhaps a new screen is in order, or some new eyes maybe...

or you get an understanding that not all customers have the same screen, so customer of ocuk will be on screens with their brightness turned all the way down and contrast levels slightly lower then normal, which would make it harder to see. there is so much information on a single page i forget how much each visitor takes in but it's so minimal. you don't want to go making things blend better too much when you're paying someone to make a banner which sole purpose is to grab their attention. geesh

to put it simple - i can see it fine. can you be sure customers can when it's being used and not put up for us to examine? with the op's example you have a much better chance that they will be able to easily see the image.

i also made the image to show how the mouse clearly fades into the black. the colours go from light to medium to darker to black. maybe you're the one who needs a new monitor.

alright i'm off to bed

edit: another example of the different contrasts. top is yours, bottom is op's. i used green to show it better. the middle green block stands our far better then it does on yours. someone with a lower contrast monitor will less likely see the darker shades and think it's all one colour which would lose the mouse, so therefore the op's is better and all that.

Dont worry there will be hundreds of banners and lots of banner styles to play with. You will see plenty of variations in the future dont you worry.

Put a small touch of outer glow on it then, problem solved in less than 5 seconds. Like I said, it was a quick dirty mock up, it was just meant to illustrate a point, not be a final design piece.
