Hi,

Can anyone recommend some HDD sector repair software.

I have tried HDD Regenerator with the free version not doing anything. For the life of me I can't find the full version anywhere.

I've tried Salvation Data too to find I also need a login.

I've spent a good 2-3 hours trying to find a program to use:(

If anyone could link me to anything that could help please!

Thanks

BennyC

I was under the impression the HDDs firmware automatically remapped bad sectors. Have you tried the HDD manufacturer's own tools?

Correct it does. The firmware will use error correction coding to repair any data in a bad sector, move it to a new one and then blacklist that sector.

If you still have issues outside that process it's really time for a new drive sadly :(

I have another thread on the first or 2nd page.

Basically my Laptop failed to come out of hibernation and since then has been unable to boot properly. I can't access the recovery partition, well I can but it just hangs or takes forever, and booting from my OS disc also has the same problem.

I've been using something else I found from a boot disk utility beginning with 'N' (pritty sure I can't mention it here) which has been going all night and only repaired/scanned 40gb of the 500. Pritty sure it'll still be going when I get back from work and that the drive is in a pritty bad state.

I will try 'SpinRite' this evening.

Failing that I have some utilities that I could use to reformat the drive entirely however I have 3 partitions on there one of which has my music which I would quite like to save. I last backed this up at the beginning of June and haven't really added much since but it'd be good not to erase it if possible. I might have something which allows me to reformat a select partition. I would have done this via another PC but whenever I connect the 2.5" sata notebook drive (via a caddy) to any computer it just freezes up until I unplug it at which point the computer is then fine again.

Is it likely that it's just my C drive thats going to be borked or will all partitions on the disk be affected? Would a total reformat likely solve any of this or is the whole drive a write off?

Thanks for the replies.

Edit: It's a Toshiba drive and some reading on google shows there are few free utilities? I've a feeling it's totally naffed however I'd like to be sure before taking it back and potentially being charged to fix something I could have done myself.

boot from cd with slax or ubuntu live linux and try and access them from there

should be able to copy to usb or network using them (really easy interface)

New HDD time.

Yup, I'll pop it back in to the store I brought it from. It's a small independant business. It's out of the 'standard' 1 year warranty from the store. I tried to do a bit of searching on their (Toshiba) site and *think* they offer a 3 year?

Yep if you put the serial number into the RMA section of the Toshiba site, it should show the warranty status. It is up to the retail to decide if they charge you to send it to them.

Go to Toshiba directly if it's out of it's first year, also be aware that if it was sold as part of a system it may only have a year's warranty.

Thanks chaps.

It was purchased separatley as an upgrade for the existing HDD in my laptop as I had ran out of space.

Can't seem to find the site to enter the serial no. in to check. Only found one for complete laptops not components.

Thanks for that bled. Which one has the easiest interface? Are both free utilities?

I tend to use Knoppix, bootable linux CD with a decent interface :) Just ensure you plug in any USB devices before booting it otherwise it might not find some low powered drives (occassionaly!)
