Limewire is dead !

It is a terrible piece of software.

My "friends" thought it was the 2nd coming, I kept telling them that it was gash, now they wonder why their laptops are slow.

This is excellent news, I'm of the firm belief that obsolete technology like this should be wiped off the face of the earth, only by forcing people to use newer technologies can we fully advance on a social-technological scale, the death of Limewire should significantly reduce virus proliferation on a global scale and benefit us all, especially those in technical support roles. If only we could eliminate everyone browsing the internet on 1024x768 monitors as well, a thorn in the side of any web developer...

And nothing of value was lost.

My main reason for disliking Limewire wasn't because of the number of idiots who used it and managed to get themselves infected, but because it's written in Java. I hate Java applications.

Thank goodness Limewire is dead! Hated that program and I spend a lot of time removing viruses from people using the program.

Also - am I right in saying that if someone downloads limewire or has it already installed - it will no longer function as a program? Can't download etc?

I hope so!

Dont know why everyone is calling limewire a virus giver. You must be stupid to get anything dodgy from it, i never did.

Indeed.

Seems like a lot of users here aren't quiet the elite PC users they make out if they got a virus from Limewire.

I never had a problem and have been using it for the last 5 years.

The biggest issue is for people who have to help fix these "stupid peoples" computers, who did use it and did get infected by it, it was a nightmare program for companies with staff laptops. Lots of my less computer literate friends also used to use it.

I'm curious to know what people use for file sharing these days too.

Since 16 when I started having part time jobs and then later full time jobs in between uni I've not pirated much at all.
The big things that made me want to pirate such as having to deal with physical media and DRM are all gone; I can just store my card details with a company like Apple's iTunes or Steam and download the purchase instantly to my HD with one click, so much easier than torrenting/p2p. :)

Someone seems to have missed the point why people use torrents/p2p.

Clue 1: It's not for its convenience.
Clue 2: in bold...

Of course I would also like to mention at this point that I vehemently condem all sorts of illegal filesharing activity that violates copyrights issues.

You wouldn't download a car would you? /snigger

Thought limewire was already dead, remember the days of Napster back in the days of when I was stuck on 56k, it was painfully slow to get just one MP3.

eDonkey was the next big thing for me, haven't used eDonkey for years and I think the eDonkey2000 client was pulled some years back. Torrent files are now the new way of obtaining stuff but to be honest - why bother? I use last.fm and spotify, as well as youtube. I haven't downloaded an MP3 file in years..

so many online radio players, music collections that are funded by sub or advertistments that I can just hook my laptop up to a decent sound system and plonk a playlist from spotify or last.fm and that'll keep me entertained around the house for a few hours..

And as far as I can see, last.fm and spotify are 100% legal.. !! not so sure about youtube. Always seeing videos getting pulled due to copyright infringements.
