Hi guys,

I kept reading on various forums about a "kick" you should feel when the secondaries open at around 3500-4000rpm.

I can't say I was really noting any sort of kick. I'm aware of the common IMRC fault so decided to change the transistor and I also re-worked a couple of dry solder joints. If I rev under the bonnet I can see the actuator move when the revs build up, so it would appear the IMRC is working fine.

The car pulls to the red line. It feels slower than when I got it a couple weeks back but I guess I may just be getting used to it?

My friend has an RAC code reader so I will see if I can borrow this to double-check for errors.

So, how should the performance of the car be? Is this kick really subtle or more like Vtec?

Nothing like VTEC, i hardly noticed it at all, although i suppose subliminally you can feel it a little bit...

My brother has one of these, i have driven it a few times and never felt this "Kick" that you mention.

It just feels very smooth through the range, nothing like his old impreza where your stomach would be pushed back against your spine.

I kinda know what you mean, as soon as it hits about 3200 it picks up quicker, but not massively.

I definitely notice a kick around 3500 in mine. Hard to say how big it is considering I've not really driven many cars though.

Thinking about it, mine is due a service soon, any Bristol based ocukers know if there are any particularly good places to get an ST serviced fairly locally?

Sorry for the hijack, in my Focus I get a surge at ~5000rpm to the redline, is that what you describe as a kick?
I was wondering if something was wrong on my car but looks like it's normal?

The 'kick' you're talking about is just where the engine makes the most power. The kick from the Mondeo is due to other witch craft going on in the engine.

you certainly notice it when its not working, when mine went i could barely overtake trucks on a dual carridgeway.
i ended up doing the same with the transistor and reworking all the solder joints, i also relocated the box to just in front of the battery (or was it underneath? it was a long time ago) so that the cooler air kept it working.
in its current location it can get rather warm :)

if you've ever driven one where it does work and then one that doesn't it's incredibly noticeable. I had an intermittant fault on mine where if i restarted the ignition whilst driving it'd start working again! it was more than obvious enough when it wasnt though, it'd really struggle to get above 4.5-5k, where as normally it'd race to 7k.

edit: you can see it open on this graph (the higher graph was after I changed the throttle body and inlet manifold to SVT ones). When they're not on it really flattens out as you can see the torque begin to do

should hear engine note change slightly as well.
Although the one I use dto own had a dual exit exhaustand K&N fitted so that may have made the note change more noticeable, not sure as I have never sat in a standard one.
