I've had family members and friends suffering from depression and psychotic episodes. Been quite tough on everyone in the family but the NHS have been brilliant.

I have known three people who have suffered serious mental illness.

All three were sectioned for a period of time.

I have lost touch with two of them, but one of them is still taking rispiredone to assist, though they are holding down a decent job now.

All because of drugs.

Yes, and mental illness is like any other physical illness, with the right treatment it will get better, we just choose to ignore it and label people

The idea behind UK's mental illness policy is to offer no help until they break the law then throw away the key.

This has been the UK's policy since victorian times and it still goes on today.

My grandmother (dad's mum) has had Alzheimer's for a few years. I sometimes hear of my mum and dad going on about the psychotic antics she occasionally gets up to due to being somewhat childlike (I seem to recall she once threw a plate or some other sort of china at another patient where she stays).

My other grandmother I believe has had a scare recently, as she's getting to a point it seems where she forgets small things every now and then. She went for some sort of check up, but I never asked my mum how she got on.

The daughter of a woman I have known all my life suffers from severe OCD. She's getting better, but at one point she would use a whole bottle of shampoo/body wash every shower and would be in there for a couple of hours. She couldn't wear the same clothes twice and anything that had been in the washing machine that either touched the door on the way out or the floor would have to be washed again.

Her husband came home on more than one occasion to find her sitting naked on the stairs saying she had no clothes that she could wear. He used to have to go out and buy her new stuff everyday almost.

As I say, she's getting better now, but only after intense psychological assistance. She's still really touchy about some things though. It's really sad.

As well as this, my Great Aunt suffered with Dementia for the last 18 months of her life. It is awful to see someone you love slip away from you. She used to be an accomplished Pianist, the heart and soul of the party. Towards the end, she couldn't even remember how to open a gift-wrapped present. She lost most motor skills and wouldn't/couldn't eat/drink without constant assistance :( Dementia is a cruel, cruel disease.

I have a couple of family members who've had spells in the local mental hospital, nothing major though, suicide attempts stemming from chronic depression mainly.

Nothing major, but they spent time in a mental hospital, and attempted to kill themselves?

If that doesn't constitute major, then I'm not sure what does.

My nana was diagnosed with severe dementia last year, Its awful to watch. Sometimes she recognises me, sometimes she doesnt, she gets very frustrated if she cant do a simple task (which 99% of the time she cant) and she always tells me what my grandad (who passed away last year) has been doing and that he will be "here soon".
