I need to get a graphics card for my new build but i am unsure of what to get out of the two specified in the title. Here is a list of my current components:
=======================================
Intel i5 760 - Corsair H70 Cooler
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD6
40Gb Intel SSD - Boot Drive
(I am not sure of what memory modules to get yet)
=======================================
If you could let me know your thoughts on both graphics cards to help me choose that would be great thanks.

This question has been asked so many times recently

Here we go same old:

Both cards are very similar in performance

The 470 can be overclocked to 800mhz + and give near GTX 480 performance

The 470 runs way hotter than a 6870 and uses a fair bit more power.

The 6870 is very quiet running compared to the 470 and use less power.

Take you pick on the above comments and choose, as both cards are near on same price, but have the same performance all but

Thanks for the summery it helps a lot.

If you don't plan on overclocking then its a no brainer to get the 6870. We still don't really know how good a 6870 overclocks yet but i don't think it will be as good at overclocking compared to a gtx470.

6870 is slightly faster out the box which if your not overclocking does make it the better option on that count. So far overclocking results from the 6870 have only produced around 7% real world performance increases overall. The GTX470 on the other hand can easily do 800MHz clocks and if you get a good card beyond. Which produces real world gains in the region of 16-22% or potentially more.

If i was to buy a pre-overclocked 470 from XFX would it be worth my wile or is overclocking graphics cards as easy as overclocking processors?

XFX 470 - Link

Way easier to OC than a CPU,just buy the cheapest 470 and dont worry about manufacturers overclocks.

Save some money :

use MSI afterburner to OC,if you cant use it make another thread here and we can all help you with it.

Edit: Or get this and get a silly warranty with it for £10 more:

Overclocking gpu's is pretty easy, the card youve linked is an EVGA factory overclocked card, (625 mhz), most have the basic core clock of 607 mhz, but theyll comfortably go higher, running my 630mhz core clocked gigabyte at 751mhz, no voltage increase required.

Just out of curiosity, why do you choose to believe the overclocking results of 6870s, but not the crossfire results of them?

Its not that I don't believe the crossfire results, I know what goes into those numbers and I know the picture is a bit different to the simplistic min, max and avg. results.

Also the OCing results are fairly consistant over a broad range of sites, whereas the benchmark results are very different site to site.

But surely that broad range of sites is made of up ones that aren't very reputable? Additionally, the overclocking is without voltage control too, no?

What cooling do you need to overclock a graphics card to a figure that makes results worth wile.

It took 1-5C ambient and a massive voltage increase to get a 6870 anywhere near 1200MHz and IIRC that wasn't even 100% stable.
