UK government proposes to block all Internet porn as standard

i've been exposed to pornography and the like since i was but a wee child and it's not affected me in the slightest.

You mean you aren't traumatised, unable to form relationships or unable to leave your bedroom??

This is weirder than that woman who's immune to HIV  We must clone you, it's the only way for the human race to survive along side porn!

Children aren't exposed to porn on the internet. When I launch my browser it shows google, but when I turn the television on I'm shown sexual imagery in music channels, advertising, drama, movies. Using porn on the internet is pre-meditated, good parenting will ensure children aren't 'pre-maturely sexualised'. However, no matter how good a parent you are, you can't control sexualised advertising, dance videos, or airbrushed magazine covers that warp children's minds.

You are either very ignorant, or very deluded if you do not think exposure to material has affected you. At the very least, desensitisation to content others might consider 'shocking' and a reduction of inhibitions in terms of socially and/or morally acceptable norms.

So maybe we should ban religious sites in case children see them too?

Where did i say whether i agreed with the proposal or not? I challenged a previous posters assertion on his immunity to exposure to pornography as a child. Do i think there is a difference between a child stumbling upon a support group for the flying spaghetti monstor and a child stumbling upon a video of a Hispanic women fellating a horse? Yes, i do.

On topic, i think its a nice idea in principle but technologically impractical and politically disastrous. Since its 'opt-in' the opt'ins will have to be recorded somewhere. How long until people start losing their jobs because their name/address appears on the porn enabled list. How long until the program is expanded to included politcally motivated websites like wikileaks, etc. Do you really trust our government with this power?

Jestar - this thread is all about blocking porn (assuming you don't opt-in).

To block anything you have to be able to identify it. You can't identify ALL porn. Sure you can block keywords, known domains, and other things like that - but it's far from complete.

It is currently the case that anybody can host anything anywhere on the internet. It would not be impossible to tighten down this principle, for instance, licensing web hosting rights and blocking traffic that has not been registered with a central authority. Your assumption is based on what the internet is, as it exists today, not on what the internet could be.

They can't get rid of illegal sites, what makes anyone think they can do the same with porn.

I would have thought that the porn sites would have a lot of power with the money they make. I doubt this will ever happen.

...until we get taken over by China. :D
