The "More money than sense" test

Well i plan on getting a 2600K and a gigabyte p67a-UDx
Not sure if i want a 4,5 or 7 haven't decided yet.
Maybe availability will affect that decision.

Note to OP
I plan on this as being a toy in addition to my existing i7's and i5's.
How does that sit with you in your small world.

Why is there a stigma associated with upgrading to Sandy Bridge? I have not seen one this bad in all of my time reading about computer hardware changes and new tech coming in. Why are people so bitter with Sandy Bridge? Is it because you think Intel owe us something more? I'm a bit confused by it but admittedly, have not read up on Sandy bridge a lot at all.

First Intel Sandy Bridge quad-core benchmarks: Nearly as fast as Core i7 980X, could make low-end graphics cards obsolete, with comments like this on the net it must be pretty decent.

You could also say that a Phenom II 970 is just as fast as an i7 920, both at stocks speeds.... it's still useless for overclockers. Sandybridge has a much more aggresive turbo so it may seem that its a lot better in some benchmarks.

Hi RobotGirl :)

If people want to change well that’s their right ?
Of course it's there right and I don't think anyone has said anything to the contrary?

People can buy what they please and spend their money how they like . . . however once that person comes on a public forum and speaks their mind they are open to other people questioning them and wondering why they do certain things . . . if this same person then reveals they do things without any good reason then some people reading may be left scratching their heads and wondering if the poster is rational or reasonable! :D

I have an i7 920 and it runs very hot .I have it oc'ed to 3.36 atm but any higher and 2 of the cores start to get really hot .It is also the DO version and I have tried resetting it ,reapplying the thermal paste and also different cpu coolers ,all to no avail
Intel® Core™i7 @ 3.36GHz . . . sounds decent enough, must make light work of your whatever "work" it is given no? . . . or are you a benchmarker?

Strange that two cores become superheated if you clock further but if you tried reseating the cooler a few times I guess its either an uneven base to the heatsink or perhaps a concave IHS on the processor . . . may be something you could correct by lapping the chip or heatsink? . . . sometimes its actually an internal problem where the processor core under the IHS has a bad solder and doesn't make good contact with the IHS? . . . if it is the latter there is not much you can do about that AFAIK?

I'm pretty sure there isn't a serious problem here, at least I'm sure there isn't sufficient justification to spend out several hundred pounds on a new SB system! ;)

don’t tell me I don’t know what I am doing ? My first computer was a 486 Intel which ran at 50 mhz and I also studied computer information systems at university .
I'm not sure anyone did actually say you don't know what your doing? . . .

The fact you have used a computer since the 468 days and studied computer information systems at university is cool . . . however this doesn't actually mean you know very much at all about computer hardware?

I been eating food for over forty years but I'm still a **** chef and know very little about nutritional values and mineral content of most foods . . . I studied novell networking for 3 months but still have problems getting some wireless network adapters set-up . . .

also like the look of the new EFI bios that comes on sandy bridge boards ,I am hoping that it will significantly increase boot times and the fact that you can use a mouse in it also appeals to me .
I would have to say pigs will fly before I part with several hundred pounds for the "pleasure" of using a mouse to change BIOS settings and enjoy slightly quicker boot times . . .

I think that any upgrade is a personal choice and well saying that people have more money than sense totally negates peoples other reasons for changing
No not at all?

If one wishes to spend several hundred pound for no good reason then one simply spends several hundred pounds and doesn't attempt to make any weak "justification" for their actions . . .

If one simply "wants" something without an actual "need" and lets other people know about this what do you think any rational person would think?

I could say I went to a real smart 5 star michelin restaurant yesterday and ordered everything I liked the look of from the menu . . . I didn't actually need to order seven starters, fifteen main courses and nines desserts but I was curious to know what they looked like and have a little taster from each of them, they was quite surprised to see a man sitting alone at a table with thirty one plates of food most of which went uneaten but I had the cash spare and I think £841 was a bargain . . .

What do you think RobotGirl? . . . am I smart with my money or what! :D . . . you should do the same too, it makes sense to me so I'm sure it can make sense to you to do the same thing! ;)

It also presumes that people are wrong to change and well their not ,some people can’t afford it ,some people are too tight to spend the money and some people are happy with their machines performance
Nobody has said anything about right or wrong, instead we are just examining the "reasons" and "logic" behind what people are thinking . . .

Take new forum member GoogalyMoogaly for example . . . a man who by his own words is too stupid to get a good job that pays him well but yet he still wants to pay out £200 to acquire a new mobile phone for features he will not use and simply for something to play with and he wants to know he has the "bestest" . . . I'm not saying anything he is doing is right or wrong but I think he would have a hard time to convince me to do something similar as there doesn't appear to be much "sense" in doing so? . . .

If one has a very capable computer and doesn't have a personal money tree there doesn't seem to be much in the way of "justification" to upgrade . . . the main thing for me to even really consider an upgrade has to be a "need" . . . if my current PC can handle the tasks I "need" to get done then why am I gonna upgrade? . . . because I'm bored and want something to play with? . . . nah! . . . my TripleCore PC is the nuts, does everything I "need" just fine . . . if I'm bored I can play a game or watch a film or go out to meet some friends etc etc etc . . . . I can't see building a new PC is really the best form of boredom relief or the best use of my money personally! :p

In reality . . . far from the smoke screen and mirrors . . . far from the forum full of people foaming at the mouth talking about new technology a computer is a tool . . . . no different from the way a pencil is a tool . . . a tool is mainly meant to be used to accomplish a task or a set of tasks . . . a pencil is used to write words, a list, a book, a poem . . . a pencil can be used to draw stuff, a design, a portrait . . .

geinenpenciltool.jpg

What are people using their "pencils" for these days? . . . Why are people semi obsessed with every new "pencil" that comes out? . . . what does it do that their previous "pencil" didn't do? . . .

Why would a rational person with a perfectly good and sharp "pencil" be prepared to spend out several hundred pounds to acquire a new "pencil" . . . because other people are doing it they do it also? . . . because a total stranger on a colourful website says you must buy this new "pencil" . . . . nothing better to spend ones money on? . . . nothing better to do in this infinite universe we dwell in except to obsess about having the biggest, baddest, sharpest pencil? . . .

What about you RobotGirl with your wonderful Intel® Core™i7 @ 3.36GHz . . . is there any real reason apart from using a mouse to control your BIOS and slightly faster boot times that you could find "justification" to part company with several hundred pounds? . . . .

What do you actually use your PC for? . . . anything exciting or creative? . . . you say you studied computer information systems at university . . . did this yield any fruit?

I will see what the reviews say after its launched and I’ll make up my own mind then .
I think you can make your own mind up even without reading a single review? . . . what on earth can a new PC do for you that your current PC cannot do? . .

Oh don't use me as an example. I buy all sorts of things I don't need because I want them.
Let me give you some more examples...
I buy and eat packets of crisps. I don't need to eat them, I'm not starving or in desperate need of any of the nutritional contents. But sometimes I just feel like I'd like to eat a packet of crisps. Yeah, I'm weird like that.
It's a similar story with chocolate biscuits. Yes, can you believe it, I sometimes eat chocolate biscuits even though I don't NEED to eat them.
Sometimes when I buy glasses I pay a bit more money for ones I think look better, even though they do exactly the same job as the cheapest pair.
I'm the same with other clothes.
I find that sometimes I'll buy brand name stuff instead of own brand things because I want to. I don't really have a good reason to spend the extra money I just do it? I'm serious, I do!
I've even know some friends that will drink alcoholic drinks even though they don't NEED to. I don't feel the need to but they do, how weird is that?
I know some people that like to have fun from time to time even though there is no NEED for them to have fun to continue living their life. To be frank I think they're just weird. Can you imagine doing something you don't NEED to do just because you want to? How dumb must these people be? Even if not a waste of money it can waste time.

Why are some spending £150 on 5870's in MM....They want more FPS in games?

What is your current card not doing that warrants the upgrade?

BW stop being so self righteous and hypocritical

People always want more speed even if they need it or not. And quite frankly who cares. Let them get on with it.

Kind of agree.

The whole point of any computer upgrade is that it's "faster".

Then again, one could argue that an I7 doesn't need an "upgrade"... it's at best a sideways shuffle.

Having said that, people like playing with new toys! :o:p

I'll stick with the 920 I have until it's dead, well or the RAM/Mobo die and I have to upgrade one of them... and the whole lot will probably go with it..

Will be upgrading the GPU long before the CPU most likely unless for some reason I need to do a complete new build....

Have a Q6600 so may look into one of the K chips depending on the price point for the boards and the chips. I doubt ram prices will change much.

I don't NEED to upgrade from my i5-750 to a i5-2500K or i7-2600K, but I'm interested in doing so because I think I'll be able to dump my discrete gfx card (not a gamer) and still get decent performance, aswell as thinking about changing form factor from my current ATX with Antec P182 case, to something a whole lot smaller.

I don't really need to justify why I'm thinking of upgrading on here, to some people it might seem nonsensical, but they don't know all the variables.

Bought my 920 over a year since and its still more than fast enough for anything i can throw at it. So, i will be keeping this until i see the new x2012 gear ....SB is just not good enough.
