Help me spend some money...

If it was me it would be the SLR or the telescope.
You can get a nice starter telescope for £300 BUT be prepared to put a lot of effort into it if you want to look at anything beyond the usual moon and planets. They are not easy to find!

My SU is a disgustingly overpriced place :(. They rip off the average student so that they can give funding to minority activities such as basket weaving - YES!!

Well, the shops are alright... but drinks at union nights are too expensive!

You don't mean Sheffield, do you? (I seem to remember you were a Shef Uni'er as well?) Surely now, I always found the UoS Union pretty cheap for drinks!

(inb4 don't call me Shirley)

If it has taken you this long to build up a £300 spend then be careful of the DSLR option, if the shutterbug bites, you'll be eyeing up £700 prime lenses, £1.5k's worth of studio lighting and a myriad of other money-sucking gubbins.

ARGHHHHHH.

Ultimate frisby is a BUCS sport... whilst American football isn't. Actually ridic.

That also annoys me.

Haha, this is why alcohol is the answer to most 'spec me' questions. At least it'll help him decide what to do with any change :)

Yeah, Shef. To be fair, they're not overpriced compared to the competition... however, I want "lolololol ridic low/borderline encouraging binge drinking" prices. I wasn't at Union Christmas Day this year, but apparently they ramped up the prices for that - straight up got rid of the 2-4-1 bottles offer they had the year before, for example :( (I had an essay title released the day before it... then the deadline was the day after it [essay title on the tues, UXD on the weds + deadline on the thurs]). Gutting to walk home from the IC, past Fusion/Foundry, whilst that was still on :'(.

Basically I either want ridic cheap drinks... or money to actually go to help fund my American football team, as we get no funding. I'm looking at it selfishly!

Ah OK. I graduated last year so I've probably missed all the price hikes. I just remember stupidly cheap drinking in Fusion/Foundry to make Population bearable! Tapton bar was cheap too (lived there first year) although I hear it's all gone now!

Here at Cambridge I can just about afford to binge on tap water, it's a bit more expensive than Shef! :p

Go for the DSLR.

It is an investment and will capture memories which are far more important than the rest of your options. Those other choices will be most likely be forgotten in the coming years with hardly anything to show from them.

Where as a decently capture photograph will always be something to hold on to.

I win with this argument.. yes I do. :p

it took you 3 years to save £300?

Comments like this are bang out of order and always unneccessary, what right do you have to turn your nose up at somebody else's disposable income.

To the OP I would recommend the DSLR, Im not a massive camera buff but since I had mine Ive been nothing but pleased to have a half decent camera

Give to the poor you're always bleating about?

I know this was said in jest, but in all seriousness - what good would that do? If all the money were shared out equally then it would all be in the hands of a select few in no more than a few months. Why should i give a huge percentage of my 'profit', if you will when those with enough profit to actually make a difference rarely do?

The only lasting way to help 'the poor', which i don't think i've mentioned too much, is to completely change the system.

DSLR.

If you enjoy it enough, you could potentially create some income with it, if not, then they tend to hold their value quite well anyway :)
