To HD Or Not HD

I'm on virgin and the HD channels are all free, granted there aren't as many as sky at the moment but they are adding new channels every month, Virgin HD seems clearer than sky HD too, I was watching BBC HD at a friends and didn't think it looked as good as at home but that could have been his setup

His point is that it's an LCD TV though, not a proper AMOLED display as they try to make people think. They don't call traditional LCDs 'CCFL TV's' do they. ;)

No, but the terms LED and AMOLED shouldn't neccessarily be used as one and the same.
LED certainly at the moment is marketed as a LCD television with LED backlights.
Most of the "general public" have no idea wiah AMOLED is - except those who happen to have one on their mobile phone.

I've never seen them marketed as 'LCD televisions with LED backlights'. Indeed if we look at your link from earlier:

Nowhere in the title or description does it say "LCD television with LED backlights", you have to actually go into the technical spec to see LCD mentioned. They don't show that level of technical spec in most high street stores, at least not when I was buying a TV 3 weeks ago.

Even online you can find 'LED' TVs being sold without even mentioning LCD at all, even in the tech spec:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-42LE4500...reeview/dp/tech-data/B0043M66AO/ref=de_a_smtd

That was the first TV I found with a search for 'LED tv' too.

I have a 32"LG LCD...must be round 4 yrs old or something and i have HD with sky...i notice a better picture when watching sports ie football etc and also my discovery and Nat Geo HD channels...mind u i think it looks pretty good....saying that i really need to get round to buying a newer and bigger TV...

There is a noticeable difference in quality, however I've chosen not to subscribe to HD channels because I don't need it, and will therefore be an unnecessary expense

I don't have Sky, and I don't think I'd subscribe to their service for it. I will set myself up for FTV HD channels though. When I'm back home where they have sky HD, its the FTV channels I tend to watch anyway :D

I pay my mam the difference to have a virgin HD box in my room since im at home just for a year. I don't really watch much TV though, so i regret it a little bit.
However since i didn't have a good signal in my room i thought i might aswell.
Upgraded from 20mb broadband to 50mb and got the extra HD box in my room.

I do enjoy it though and often flick between to see the differences.

Maybe I'm just young and got super 1337 eyes, but I can see the difference on a 37" screen!

Fast moving things is where the difference is really noticeable - The Six Nations and the Winter Olympics were just soo much better in HD. I guess it's because the SD is compressed soo much to use such little bandwidth?

I'm used to be firmly in the 'not much difference' category and kept meaning to cancel my HD subscription. However i recently replaced my old Samsung 40 inch LCD for a 46 inch LCD and now I can really see a huge difference. Add to which F1 is now HD so I'm definitely keeping it.

However the only thing that concerns me with the F1 is that HD is always a few seconds behind the SD feed, which in turn was a second or two behind the online F1 live timing. I worry the timing is going to be pretty much unuseable unless they implement a cache/delay feature.

F1 will be on BBC One HD so free :p.

Yesterday I was flicking around and on BBC 2 and BBC HD was some train program with Michael Portillo. The HD channel was a good 30+ seconds behind the SD channel! (that was on Astra 2D if someone can explain it!)

If I cancel HD then will I need a new freesat HD box, or do Sky not block it from their boxes? I might consider cancelling if that's the case, I don't have movies, I only watch football on Sky Sports HD and that alone isn't worth a tenner a month for HD.

Just upgraded HD with Virgin for basically no extra cost. Before, we had the basic phone, tv and internet package, but the cost of calls generally knocked our bill up to about £45 p/m.

Now we have XL TV with V+ HD, and unlimited evenings and weekend calls for £44.50.

Only watched a couple of football matches on it so far, but it is noticeably better.

The three Freeview HD channels i have are broadcasted at 1080i.. makes a difference on my Samsung 46", The 2010 World Cup was mint, also BBC Wildlife programmes look stunning. Looking to get a Virgin or SKY HD soon :)

60 inch full HD screen here and the difference is huge.

Well it would be on a screen that large! The difference is night and day on the 1080p 70inch Sony SXRD I use.

The problem with HD is you need a good size screen or a very close viewing proximity to get the best from it. 32inch 1080p screens are a waste of money imo unless you are sat virtually nose to the screen.

I wish manufacturers would release some of the large screen 1080p sets over here that the US and Australian markets seem to get, especially the rear pro's,Mitsubishi for instance have an 82" 1080p set for very reasonable cost, but it's not available in the uk.Obviously there is no demand for such large TVs over here, for this I blame you lot for being so fascinated in small/slim TV's that you can hang on the wall. C'mon! start demanding proper sized T.V's instead of settling for your 42inch portables.:p

I don't have a clue, sorry. Worth investigating maybe.

I'd imagine that you'd continue receiving BBC HD as it's unencrypted, but that you wouldn't get the details on the EPG.

Any free to air HD channels you will still get even if you don't subscribe to the HD pack.

So BBC one HD, BBC HD, Channel 4 HD, ITV HD.

I find the content that is on TV to be crap

Ditch Sky and spend your money on Lovefilm instead

No adverts, no nonsense
