Earthquake in Japan....9.0...ouch!

Try telling that to the poor sods fighting a losing battle in Fukushima.

I'm not completly denoucning Nuclear. You pro-nuclear'ites just need to learn to converse with people who have a bit of trepidation when it comes to the tech given the pretty horrendous outcomes we have seen in history. Instead you just belittle there lack of knowledge!

what horrendous outcomes?

You realise more people die every year in cars in Britain alone than have died in all nuclear accidents in history?

Isn't it the german bird whose running an election right now who started bringing up checking into nuclear safety of their reactors and has championed the idea of turning them off, some 2 weeks before the election happens? Only saw a small report on it but, basically she's just jumping on a current event before her opponent, scaring her public then appearing to be the saviour, gets elected and those plants will probably be back on and classed as perfectly fine a couple weeks later.

Germany shuts down 7 nuclear plants.

A temporary measure while the German's assess its nuclear strategy. I suppose this is bowing to public demand after the events in Japan but seems a bit much.

Just seen that... what the ****. Germany and a few other countries have already decided to ditch Nuclear power, Germany by 2020. Why don't they just close them all down now if they are that arsed about silly concerns over them from the public, why extend them in the first place?! Merkel and the CDU just boggle my mind, they try to do stuff to ease the publics mind but then go and do this which is surely just going to add to the scaremongering that the media is causing over nuclear power now... which is down to a ridiculous earthquake and a 30 foot high wave!

So they clearly must think that they are at a major risk of a tsunami then . . . .

This is scaremongering by an entire country. Do any governments actually have any idea what they are doing?

Thats simply not true, the problem is nuclear accidents cause MANY more LONG TERM DEATHS due to cancers and sickness than instant deaths.

Dolph posted that Chernobyl only killed 4000 people and the current situation quake and Tsunami is in the 10k's(or will be).

The problem is Chernobyl has been accredited with killing anything from 250k to 1million people since from cancers that are very common with those kinds of radiations, the vast majority of those being in Russia/Ukraine/Belarus which got a lot of the worst fallout. Its obviously impossible to know exactly who got cancer and why, but when hundreds of thousands of people, in the worst hit area's from Chernobyl all get the same types of cancer in patterns completely different to less or non effected area's, the probability of those being effectively "Chernobyl deaths" is extremely high.

Sorry but Chernobyl deaths absolutely dwarf current death toll in Japan, and yearly deaths in the uk from road accidents don't even compare.

This excludes a quite devestating number of things like still babies born from radiation effected women, babies born with defects, all at vastly increased rates vs non effected area's or previous years in the same area's before the accident.

yet has only ever been confirmed as causing 50...

although where do you get 1million deaths from, even green peace's most extreme claims only come out at 100,000 deaths though cancer.

Yeah, facts, whatever next!?

And ah, the mentioning of rypt, the perennial attention-diverting escape route ;).

Sorry Robbie, but that picture is just not pertinant to laymans fission, the many other pictures on that same page are. You have been selective in what you use. The products would suggest that is the as Krypton is not typical. Continuing from the wiki link YOU provided.

Nuclear fission can occur without neutron bombardment, as a type of radioactive decay. This type of fission (called spontaneous fission) is rare except in a few heavy isotopes. In engineered nuclear devices, essentially all nuclear fission occurs as a "nuclear reaction" — a bombardment-driven process that results from the collision of two subatomic particles. In nuclear reactions, a subatomic particle collides with an atomic nucleus and causes changes to it. Nuclear reactions are thus driven by the mechanics of bombardment, not by the relatively constant exponential decay and half-life characteristic of spontaneous radioactive processes.

Its spontaneous, bombardment. You are currently trying to correct layman understanding which is similiar to saying at the moment of a car crash the two cars become one enitity that can be described as a single car.
