Hello,

My computer is now getting a bit old, im running a q6600 oc to 3.2ghz on a DFI x48 mobo with 4 gb of ram.
I've been running this for about 3 years so Im hapy with the service.

My GFX card died, so I've ordered a new GTX 480 and am now thinking in a month or two that im going to upgrade the system to get as much out of the card as possible.
Im really out of the loop on current CPU's etc so looking for some advice.
I've set a budget of around £500 for CPU, mobo, RAM and CPU cooler (unless I can find a bracket for my current noctua).
Im not set on any makes would be happy with AMD or Intel, any money saved from the £500 will go towards a Solid State HD.

I keep reading that you need about 4ghz to make use of the 480, is this true?
Do you think my q6600 would be upto the job?

Cheers

The card will perform well in your current spec, despite it's age that q6600 will still be good for your needs. Your in a great position really, chuck the 480 in and sit back enjoying it and wait for AMD Bulldoxer to come out.

Then decide whether it's Bulldozer or Sandybridge, or if it's worth it to you at all.

Im in a similar position, i have a q9650, but my mobo and ram are old so really want to pop an i5 2500k and new mb and ram in to compliment my gtx480 to get the most out of it.

My wallet is very happy!

Im gonna upgrade at some point, but now I can wait a bit longer, got my lovely car to fix etc.

My Puter is used only for games really, Im guessing most people recommend the i5 over the i7?

I'd go for a i5 2500k, the difference between that and the i7 2600k is HT which is mainly useful for video editing/encoding and won't make a difference for gaming. The i5 2500k is awesome for gaming, I have one and it just destroys everything I throw at it :).

Here's what I think you should look into buying:

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz Retail with FREE Shogun 2 £179.99 inc VAT
GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3 1600MHz PLUS Dual Channel £39.98 inc VAT
MSI P67A-GD55 Intel P67 - £135 - Crossfire/SLI ready for your GTX 480
Corsair Hydro H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler - £50

Total - £405

Then you have enough money left to get a SSD HDD like the OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive for £98.

well if you do want to upgrade then:

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz Retail with FREE Shogun 2 £179.99 inc VAT

Asus P8P67 Intel P67 ** B3 REVISION ** £124.98 inc VAT

GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3 1600MHz PLUS Dual Channel £39.98 inc VAT

Akasa AK-CCX-4002HP Venom CPU Cooler £38.99 inc VAT

that would give you an easy 4.4GHz for £395 inc vat & del.

As above. I loving the performance I'm getting from my 480, and thats coming from a 5970! If your budget can more to 600, you could also get a Vertex 3 - something that I will be investing in once I get paid.

Wait for Bulldozer tbh.

See how that impacts prices and performance.

GTX480 will be perfectly fine on a Q6600

Is there even a confirmed date for bulldozer yet? I want AMD to make a comeback as much as te next guy but I can't really see it performing on par with my 4.8 Ghz 2600K.
