5850 + 400W Corsair PSU.

should be enough as long as you dont have a huge number of hard drives or something.

graphics card will take ~ 160W
CPU will take no more than 150W unless it has a major overclock on it

so, that leaves 90W+ for the HDD's, DVD's, fans and other stuff.

if you have the cash lying around, i would upgrade to the bequiet 530W just to be on the safe side.

*edit*
tiger, those PSU calculators leave a nice big overhead, because some PSU's are really bad quality, and it takes this into account

I really will not be able to upgrade the PSU as I'm on a very strict budget.

I have a AMD Phenom II X4 3.2GHz CPU, 4GB DDR2 and a 250GB HDD.

So just to confirm it'll run fine with a 400W Psu? :)

Cheers

Well I have a 6850 with a 500W PSU - so I doubt a min 600W will be needed for a 5850. I may be wrong though.

edit..

+ I have 500GB H/D, 4GB Ram and AMD 965.

it should be fine. just looked at the anandtech benchmark, and it says total system power consumption with 1x 5850 running furmark was 307W.

the easiest way to check if its ok would be to look at the sticker on the side of the PSU. it should say what leads go where, and what wattage they can all handle. if the PCIe power leads can handle 160W, then it should be fine (also, make sure it doesnt increase any of the combination maximum wattage boxes to above what they can handle.

on my PSU it looks like this. http://pcfoster.pl/public/images/recenzje/pure_power/pure_02.JPG

the 12V rails are for the graphics card, and are the ones your interested in.

hmm, prehaps thats not so helpful, not sure which voltage goes where for everything else

When i had my 5850 which was overclocked to 1000/1250 @ 1.2v along with the rest of the components in my siggy, max load at the wall was 274w and even then only by running Furmark stability test and Linx/IBT both together at the same time. Normal gaming usage was 174-235w depending on the game.

Even with the 480 i am only seeing a max of 380w at the wall and again, that's only by running Furmark stability test and Linx/IBT both at the same time.

The Corsair CX400 is a excellent psu and is far superior to the builder series that replaced it.

you have a decent make PSU and a 5850 is a fairly low power card.
I would fully expect it to work without issue.

You be fine, I run 2 with my system below and this pulled 430w from the mains with Prime and 3d win mark 06 running.

Thanks for the reassurance guys. Just didn't want to buy it to find out it wouldn't work!

Will pick one up in a few days. :)

I have a 4870 running on a 530w, and I think it's a very close shave. If I were you I would upgrade to at least 600w psu.

Use this to calculate your wattage required.

Remember to give yourself some room for future proofing.

My CX 400 wouldn't skip a beat with my 4870,

@op if its a CX400 it will have no trouble as its rated much lower than what its capable of.

Still have it, needs a fan bearing RMA though . :)
