Cash Machines

I just wanted him to say, "I am 12 and what is this?"

And I know it's a little, contrived, means-nothing internet meme but god damn it would have made my day. A bright ray of sunshine through the downpour of **** that is GD. We're never going to get another 12 year old. What a waste!

So, yeah, that sounded weirder than I intended.

He is 12. Read the thread.

And? A 12 year old should know simple things like this, it's shocking, nay, horrendous that he doesn't know! I was treated as an adult when I was that age, and was able to make my own decisions and was in charge of my own finances.

I wouldn't describe it as 'simple'. It's just one of those things you learn when you use a cash point on a regular basis. Due to his age (as i said in another post), he probably hasn't needed to use a cash point and if he has, it has been when he is out with his parents or whatever, so probably during the day. He is aware that some things are closed on sundays so that shows he is "smart" already but it's just one of those funny old questions. :)

Riiiight, kids should know these things. I know a few kids that wont see a cash card till they're 16. Where exactly do they learn that its set in stone a cash machine is open 24/7 and on a sunday?

Interesting info! I've also seen Windows-style blue screens on ATM and to be honest it scared me, I would've felt much safer if they ran on some kind of custom Unix thing! The worst was one I saw in a small town down south that was stuck in the bootup screen of Windows 98! And that was only 3 years ago or so!!!
Surely, since they run on Windows, they'd be open to whatever vulnerabilities Windows has even if the actual ATM software was secure? Also, how do they communicate with the bank's servers? Is it a private LAN or do they tunnel a VPN through the internet?
I used an ATM once that had the Windows XP taskbar down the bottom. It was like someone used Alt + Enter to take it out of full screen mode. Wasn't until the next day I considered that I could have had my details stolen or something. Luckily nothings happened.

I can't fathom how they wouldn't know. How on Earth do they think that they work?
Also, people not seeing a cash card until they are 16? Again, very odd.
Maybe I give children too much credit, or perhaps I'm unusual because I knew how they worked at that age...

Yes unusual, when I was 12 I couldn't have given a flying .... about one and its inner workings, had more things on my mind than figuring out how something I never used or was interested in in the slightest worked. And to be honest I dont really care now 20 years later, I stick my card in and money comes out is about as far as my interest in cash machines go.
Damn you kids of today and not knowing how cash machines work whats society coming too:rolleyes:
