We had a bill a few months ago for £97 which we forgot about and the post goes to a different door. We checked the post and had another bill for around £167, making it £264.

We paid the £97 off then left it a couple of weeks and had a letter saying we should pay £164 or risk disconnection. We forgot and on 1st June got back and we couldnt get in. I checked and a pay as you go meter was fitted.

British gas had drilled our gate to get it and done a 'purge and relight' (something about clearing the left over gas out of appliances before fitting a meter)

We couldnt get in through the gate as our key didnt work, so called up BG. They said our new keys were at the police station, so we walked there and they knew nothing of this. Another call to BG and 3 hours later, they arranged an emergency locksmith to get us in. We got in and found a letter and also a court summons when we checked the other door. The person who came out said whoever did it, did a bodge job and completely knackered the lock on the gate and inner door. He replace the inner door lock but couldnt do the gate and said someone would be in contact from BG to fix it.

We now owe them £410 (including the £167 bill) for court cost, warrant and cost of enty and if a rep was sent out. Fair enough really as we forgot to pay

Yesterday we called them about the broken gate because it states in the letter 'If you do not allow access on 1st July 2011, your door lock(s) may be picked or drilled and replaced if necessary. Your property will be no less secure afterwards, but you will have to collect new keys from us before you can get in'

Our keys were with an engineer that had finished his shift so thats why an emergency locksmith was required. At the moment our inner door is knackered so our property is a lot less secure.

When I spoke to someone about this they said they would ring back and no-one did, another call and they said to call another department.

I'm going to go to citizens advice bureau tomorrow because it seems hopeless speaking to anyone who works in the BG call centre. Same stories from many other people at work and on internet. It will probably cost £200 to fix the gate

We are now on a pre-paid meter and have used £9 since 1st June. What appliances use gas apart from the radiators and heating water. Radiators arnt on at the moment and we can shower at the gym

Hot water and cooker + hobs if they're gas ones plus the fact pre paid meters are much more expensive than a normal tariff.
