Hello guys, not a big forum user so i do appologise in advance if this is in the wrong section but i was curious to see if any of u pro's or anyone else that has encountered the same problem could help me with this.

I just bought a EVGA Geforce GTX 580 OC and when playing certain games i get these red blotches shooting around the screen, it doesnt happen with every game which is strange. It happens very slightly on alice madness returns, doesnt happen at all on league of legends, then Metro 2033 its insane it seems like the more the card is under pressure the more i see these red blotches. I'll give u as much information as i possibly can on things i tried maybe theirs something i havent.

1. Reinstalling the drivers
2. Removed the overclock
3. Used EVGA OC Scanner, Prime95, and memtest (no errors)
4. Removed the card and cleaned everything up and placed it back in

After all this the problem still remains, i upgraded from an ATI Radeon HD 5850 to this card and the ati card never had this problem, i just hope i dont need to RMA it.

Here are my system specs and a picture of the exact problem.

http://i51.tinypic.com/a26kyf.jpg

Processor: i7 930 clocked to 4ghz
RAM: Patriot Viper 12600 1600mhz 3x2gb
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366)
Power Supply: Coolermaster 680w

Thanks for any help.

My favourite way of verifying if an nVidia card is faulty, is to run the folding@home GPU client for an hour or so, and see if I get any error message such like "NaN detected" etc.

On a side note, EVGA states that the power requirement for GTX580 is

Minimum of a 600 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 42 Amps.)

Check if your PSU can supply 42 Amps from the +12V rail.

42 Amps is for the entire system not just the gpu, it does sound like a faulty card, what is the stock voltage on the card ?

Thanks for your replies guys, i have already run tests on the gpu and its come back fine twice, i dont think using another program will change that.
I put the clock settings as low as evga would allow (around 550mhz) and the red blotches dissapeared, i guess this means my psu isnt dishing out enough power?

Strange thing is, i turned my pc on this morning and i had my card overclocked to 920mhz and everything was fine, played the game for a good hour and not a single problem, went out for a while came back turned my pc on and loaded metro and once again the red blotches were everywhere, i guess it is my psu cant really see it being anything else i dont think theres a problem with the card as i would have thought the red blotches would have appeared when i first played metro this morning.

i guess upgrading my psu is the next step forward, buying the card emptied my wallet out though lol gonna have to just put up with it i guess until payday.

when overclocked to 920mhz it doesnt go over 83 which is well under what it can handle, so its defo not a heat problem i have a very well ventilated system, so i guess it must be the PSU, im just about to go down the shop and get 1 pinched some cash off my girlfriend lol, ill post the results just for future referrence for you guys

How odd. Reading the OP I was going to say it was Video RAM problem until I saw the picture, which it still could be but i've never seen that. Have you tried a different monitor/cable just to rule that out?

test on another monitor

test on another cable

test on occt if it will pass then its ok

as ocer i have already had 3 gtx 580 for benches but never seen something like that i realy dont know what to say

The red blotches would appear all over the screen and jump around like crazy and it seemed the longer i left it the more blotches appeared, very strange.

Well i just played metro for about 25 minutes with the new PSU and a few other games for a good hour and the red blotches hasnt reappeared so far so it seems that was the problem.
My pc never had this problem until i put the 580 in so i dont think it was my monitor or the cable, if the blotches reappear i will switch them out but keeping fingers crossed the PSU has fixed it, i bought a 1000w PSU just to keep things in check and room for another 580 if needed someday.

I appreciate all you guys that have helped i doubt i would have resolved it as quickly as i have without it, so thank u :)

if for whatever reason the blotches come back ill update this thread.

cheers

Very strange, not seen this before in such a quantity.

Does it happen when watching films or anything?

not surprised it doesn't happen on league legends. Metro 2033 has produced some weird errors on a variety of cards.

Try setting the clockspeeds back to reference levels using MSI Afterburner or similar, problems such as this are common with pre-overclocked cards.

I used to have this happen with an ATI 4870 when playing games.

Odd thing though, sometimes my blotches were blue!

Never figured out why :(

Que the music from 'tales from the unexpected'

Showing your age dude :)

only happens in games not films or anything, woke up this morning turned my pc on loaded metro and the blotches have reappeared :( gonna have to RMA the card

That would suggest a card problem, may be with the processing cores or textures units?? no idea but I think you are right to RMA it.

the thing that bugs me the most is that i got in from work this evening and once again everything is fine, metro runs perfect no blotches nothing, its really annoying.
I have sent off an RMA request just waiting for the confirmation, guess ill have to go back to my 5850 for a while :(
