I think a 540i-550i would be too much. There's not much else that compares.

14k at the top end of the budget as for time being dont want to spend too much on a car

can i ask would it be too much of a risk buying high mileage one and is there any forums that have a list of the common problems with these

I would not run a BMW of this type without a good warranty. You cannot buy a good warranty for the bottom of the market cheapies, therefore I would avoid them.

Although it was a 530d SE, I got mine for £11k approved used, so you should keep an eye on the approved used site.

After your years AUC warranty expired you'd have been looking at £1400 a year to renew it on that car...

Then it was under 60k miles - although the fully comprehensive package is now £900 for a sub 60k mile E60.
