HSBC sercure key fob

This thing drives me bloody nuts, its huge and a right pain in the backside, often need to check accounts and takes forever!

Move banks. Nationwide tried this on me a few years ago. It took me 15 minutes of cocking around to pay my gas bill online. I smashed it with a hammer & moved to 1st direct the same evening.

I think the Nationwide system is a good one tbh.
You can still log on to internet banking, check your balance and move things between Nationwide accounts without using the card reader.
As soon as you want to transfer things outside of your Nationwide accounts you need the code though.

Personally 95% of internet banking for me is just seeing what my balance is, or perhaps transferring things from current to savings account or vice versa.
When I want to move things to a different bank I'm glad there is an extra layer of security there.

All bills come out through direct debit, so any other sort of transfer is very rare, for me at least.

Does anyone know if you can order two of these? Then I can just leave one at home and one in the office...the only places I really do online banking :)

It isn't possible due to the way they work.

Dongles are a little silly. The banks should be able to send a one time code via text message to a mobile phone like Gmail and PayPal.

Why not?
I've tried multiple different ones from different banks (various people in the office brought them in) and they all gave the same code when the same things were typed in with the same card.

The RBS ones are good for the free CR2032 batteries in them.

Order a new one online and more free batteries.

The barclays online system is a lot less mobile than that

Same with Natwest one:

Only have to use it when setting up a new person to pay, or a new direct debit. Don't need it on a regular basis. In fact, not sure where mine is...

The barclays one is massive so you're lucky with that one!

Oh and stop moaning it's to protect your money so it's all good!

Agreed.

Used online banking for years and never had an issue.

My wallet is thick enough will all the other cards (Uni, cash, drivers license, nectar, etc).

So now if you loose your bank card you loose your key fob too!

:D

Wallets are too bulky. Before heading out i'll stick my cashcard and some cash in my pocket.. I don't want to carry a stupid fob around with me.

But you do want to check your bank balance?

How on earth did you even remember your IB number previously by the way?

Personally I'd much rather have the minor hassle of dealing with a keyfob or other hardware security thingy for adding the occasional new payee when doing online banking than the alternative - a password/keyword/login combo that can be compromised by malware.

IIRC Barclays claim that they've little or no online account fraud for customers with their dongle, compared to still quite a lot for "traditional" log in accounts, and given how much that is costing the banks, I suspect very few of them will be without a hardware device for logging in within the next few years
IIRC the Barclays card reader will work with any compatible card, including potentially those of other banks like the NatWest one (as the method used is part of a standard, in the same way that chip and pin for store, or ATM transactions is), so it's not too bad, as you potentially only need the one reader in the house or office for any number of compatible cards (so could have one in your office desk, and one in a drawer at home)..

i can easily remember mine off by heart. i'm sure i'm not special in that regard. :p

and if i go out, i have firefox portable on a USB stick which has it remembered anyway.

i got my secure thingy in the post today. as i only use online banking at home, it's no trouble for me.

I've got one as well, and I don't know my IB number. I didn't have it on a card they gave me but I'm not sure where that is now. Chrome saves my IB number for me on my PC... :D

Haven't bothered setting up the secure key thing, really can't be bothered with it. Plan on changing banks soon any way because HSBC are just a right pain for me now.

The one I've seen was dead easy to remember.

No, I'm not telling you what it was.

Yeah, I can easily remember mine too, mostly from having to use it on the HSBC website before they changed it to allow your browser to remember it.

I was hoping there'd be a way to pretend you hadn't received the Secure Key thing and just keep doing it the normal, non-annoying way, but they only give you 30 days before it's mandatory anyway.

I don't know if HSBC have an iOS app yet, but they really need an Android one because their mobile site is rubbish. It essentially just shows your balances, nothing more. Even more useless now that you can't log in without carrying around the Secure Key thing with you.
