Anybody know what somebody would get for the scrap value of an old knackered washing machine.

We put ours out the front for the council to come collect, but we had somebody knock on our door asking if they could have it.

I can't be bothered with finding something that will carry it (won't fit in my car), so let 'em have it, anybody know how much they would get for it ?

Very little to be honest. Certainly not as much as you would have to pay out to get it lifted. Volume is how these people make their money.

our council charge something like £10 to take heavy items away (anthing like old broken washers fridges etc).

Always happy for the 'scrap man' to take it away for free, they knock aswell asking if they can take it, saves us money and hassle.

It's not a lot. I had someone come and collect a load of metal from my place - stuff we were binning during the refurb, and he took 3 radiators, a washing machine, an oven, an iron potbelly bbq, a kitchen sink, and a stainless steel exhaust. He gave me £10 for the lot, said he would get about £25 weighing it all in.

The guy turned out to be the dad of one of my neighbours a few doors down so we ended up having a bit of a chat - i don't think he was lying about the scrap value. He even told me to keep the bits of copper pipe and weigh it in myself for better money (i'd accidentally left some out, majority was out of sight to be weighed in by myself anyway), so i think that lends credibility to his figure.

considering most of the weight of a washing machine is concrete i can't think theres more than £5's worth of metal in that case.

Still £5 is £5. Pick up 5 that day and you've got £25 for nothing.

I gave my neighbor a load of metal last week when moving out. He said he gets about £200/ton. Although he said he scrapped 4 car batteries and got £25 so they must have a bit more value in them.

Full of Lead. Which is worth a lot more than Steel ;)

if you remove the motor and scrap it seperatly at the yard approx £20 for a washer.

EDIT: been out tattin the odd time

I'm supprised they were good enough to ask.
Hehe. A rough looking fella knocked on the door whilst I was at my mum's the other week, he wanted the washing machine down the side of the house. Really wasn't sure if she wanted to let it go for free, so I said no... he was really pushy and I was pretty surprised he didn't just grab it after that anyway.

Those ****** must rake every street in England looking down everyones drives for the off chance of finding something. We were doing a refurb at work and were half way down a private lane and we had a ***** knock on the door for some stuff we had lying outside. We needed it so I said no but I made sure it was back inside as I knew he would be back that night to nick it.

About 15 year ago I was parked up for the night near scotch corner in my HGV, when a ***** knocked on the window asking for fuel. Told him to jog on but when I woke up the next morning he has emptied both tanks. This was when the Appelby Horse fair was on so yes ****** do nick fuel.

Person at work had their old washing machine nicked while waitng for a new machine to arrive that day and missed out on the £25 discount for the old one.

Where I live they drive around on truck shouting through a megaphone.

****** are always trying to get in work and nick stuff, have even fooled the lodge guy a couple of times, they have contacts on the inside as well, nicked half a ton of moly once, had precut a hold in the side of a building and covered it over during the day. Then you get phonecalls in the next few weeks offering to sell you metal, not that they know how much its worth or what it actually is either.
