Hi there,

Does anyone use deviantart to upload and share their photographs?

Ive uploaded some and then its asking me about prints and giving prices and things, is this so other people can buy your photograph as a print?

Im not really fussed about selling my images :p

i use deviantart. when you upload, it then takes you to a prints screen. just navigate away from it if you dont want to sell it as a print, you still get your upload as expected. simple :)

I used to use DA....but it's a waste of time mostly, so much crap on that site to be honest.

What i don't like about DA is if you upload a photo, notice an error, reupload the shot the photo being shown on the screen is of very low quality and blur'd. But if you copy the same image location from DA and paste here for example, the quality is spot on :o

Still it's not as bad as Redbubble, if you upload a sharpened photo their stupid software takes over and adds even more sharpen so it looks better for customers, apparantly! :(

+1

everytime i log in now and go to most popular, 20% is just porn or people's myspace style photos.

That is a problem, but that's not how you get the most out of the site.

If you want to consume art, then follow groups and people who you like. The community is too big and too varied to expect fine art in every single one of the most-popular slots.

If you want to get your art out there, then you'll need to be joining the right groups and submitting to them. Obviously sitting there looking at your work then going over to the most popular and finding some random chick with her 1st gen iphone 'art' is a downer, but once you accept that, deviantart is a wonderful site. There are flaws, but you soon learn to bypass those quite easily.

Having said that I never agreed with flickr and only ever used it as an image hoster, whereas deviantart I have friends on and so had a more vested interest in getting involved.

I only want to use it to upload a few amateur photographs and get a few reviews and hits/tips! :)

Thanks

Tips you won't find too many of, and reviews don't often come in the first stint of using it as you have to either build up a group of 'watchers', or get involved in groups. Groups are the only real way to get decent numbers of hits as there are so many people circumnavigating the trash that work that gets spitballed just floats away with 3 views and 1 favourite.

If you find people who you like, or are in similar situations to you with just getting started etc., start commenting on their work. Properly, not the 'I like the colours' comments, but actually being constructive and helpful; I'd rather 30 watchers of people who will at least favourite most of my work and comment on about half, than 200 people who will favourite it and move on.

When 'befriending' people on DA be wary though; if people are putting the 'I like the colours' comments (you'll be able to spot them after a while) there's a good chance they're just hopping through the 'most recent' uploads putting in generic comments and favourites to try and get people to check out their page.
