Hey guys, im going to be upgrading my graphics card soon and just wondering if i could get by at 1080 resolution with 1GB Vram?

I don't plan on gaming at a higher res than that, but my monitor is a 3D monitor and i will be playing in 3D wherever possible.

This does mean lower AA usually which should help with the Vram, but does rendering 3D itself increase memory usage?

Thanks for any input.

I'd imagine it would use more Vram, Id say 1GB is enough for games now. Maybe in a year you will be limited to what settings you use.

1gb is enough. don't go for a less powerful gpu just for more vram. if there is an option to spend a little more for the same card with more vram, then u might aswell

If you want to game in 3D, then you best go with Nvidia, as AMD's only support 3D on paper, as its so-called 3D compatability is quite poor (don't work with most 3D monitors), and relying on 3rd party support.

Playing in 3D would put twice the workload on the graphic card, so you should really consider save up for a GTX580 if you really want to play in 3D...and you would probably need a beefier than 500W PSU as well. If you can't push the budget that far, then try to aim for at least a GTX570 2560MB.

I already game in 3D using my 5770 Marine, yes its more taxing but you don't need things like AA etc as much in 3D. With some settings turned down i get 30-60fps in most games at 1080 res, in 3D.

Obviously i'm after more power than a 5770, but saying that i would need a 580 to play in 3D is a bit of a stretch mate.

Also, 3D support on Ati cards isn't anywhere near as bad as you make out. Tridef software (most common one used with Ati cards) is actually very good (having used both Tridef and 3D Vision, i currently use Tridef and my friend has 3D Vision).

Some games Tridef is better than 3D Vision, with some 3D Vision is better.

But yeah, i will definitely be upgrading my PSU ;)

Thanks, I was hoping 1Gb would be OK. I run my games at 1080 atm on 1Gb and it seems fine, including the BF3 beta.

I was thinking 2 x GTX460 1Gb or a GTX560ti 2Gb. These would cost the same but the SLI option giving better performance than a 580!

Only at the expense of Vram... hence my concerns.

Agreed, but a GTX 1.2 gb is fine aswell
