Greatest FPS and why?

It seems like valve are more focused on portal, left 4 dead 3 etc than HL2 episode 3, which is a damn shame, i wonder if we'll ever see episode 3

Reasons?

It got me into the genre
Was such a massive thing for FPS

I first played HL1 on PS2 and knew then that it was the best FPS I've played.

I'm leaning towards half life 2 single player simply because of the sound graphics, physics, animation, ai, narrative, and best of all great fun gun play plus mod tools and some great user made mods. All delivered on a great system, worked straight out of the box except stuttering in game which i remember doug lombardi said in an interview that 2gb ram would help

The thing about Golden Eye was the single player was as strong as the multi. Everything about it was superb - the challenge, the balance, objectives, gadgets, weapons. It took ages to master and was all the more satisfying for it. Then your friends turn up and it's pistols on Archive till 4am. Other than Perfect Dark and possibly Halo, I can't think of another fps that can boast this.

My favourite FPS of all time is Halo 2, I spent so much of my time playing that game making friends and playing competitively, in the end I was quite skilled and I beat a few pros! (on XBL so they would probably own me on LAN) But still no game i've played so far has had the same appeal to me, halo 3 was clunky and halo reach was better but the bloom was random so wasn't best for playing competitvely!

Remake halo 2 for the marketplace I say.

Best PC game i've played is Half Life 2, love the atmosphere and setting, cannot wait for ep 3 or HL3. and my fav online PC game is COD4.

Best MP: Quakeworld due to the speed of gameplay and tdm mechanics. It's that good I actually pretty much gave up on trying new MP games.
Best SP: Tough, at the moment I'd say a toss up between Far Cry and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare but ask me another day and I might answer differently.

I chucked in some serious hours on FarCry MP. It was perfect in every way. Got me off the consoles and onto the PC.

My best FPS was Soldiers of Fortune 2. Played the MP since 2002 and still pop on to this day. Maps are simple, team works rocks (unless you get stuck with camping shotty *****). Also loved when they stuck in Sof2ext (3rd mod).

Wow does Far Cry(1 Im presuming) have multi-player and does tht still work? played it back in 2005/06 wen it came out just single player(was awesome) didn't know it had multiplayer.

Quake 1 with Duke Nuke 3D a close second for single player

The MP was amazing! Last time I looked there were still servers up, though this was about a year ago.
