It can be for any reason you choose, but who do you rate as your favourite scientist of all time?

For me, I think it would have to be the late Carl Sagan, hands down. To call myself a scientific layman would be to overstate my understanding of science, but that doesn't really matter when one listens to, or reads Dr Sagan. He was a simply brilliant communicator, and made science not only very accessible for the lay person, but his passion and enthusiasm were (and are) infectious and makes one yearn to learn more. Hearing him talk about evolution, the potential of extraterrestrial life, the big bang, or even anything; is still one of life's great pleasures, in my opinion.

How about everyone else? :p

Hawking, surely?

Actually that's tougher than first thought. I guess I would classify those that were far ahead of their times as the greatest, or does that apply to most of them?

I like Carl Sagan, he was a mainstay of my childhood.

I used to like Richard Dawkins (I've watched a lot of his lectures on Evolutionary Biology and find it fascinating) before he went a bit loopy, and I find Patrick Moore an inspiration, self taught and he was one of the people who inspired me to educate myself.

Aristotle, Hawking, Da Vinci, Tesla, Forbes-Nash, Alhazen to name a few are all favourites of mine....

But the greatest scientist has to be Carl Sagan, not only was he one of the few constants in my childhood, he was as Naffa says a brilliant communicator and was able to put across complex concepts in an easy to understand way.....a truely brilliant scientist.

Michio Kaku, love it when he does parts on the various universe and other science program's and of course his SCI-FI science series.
