WOuld you say its normal to carry a knife?

well read something like this

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2003/nov/30/housing.uknews

And imagine coming from or living in these type of areas.

I guess you dont?

Im long out of that and as an adult I dunno what to think because as a kid/teen Id carry a weapon and knew people who did. But now Im like well its a bit not right?

obviously to another extreme but in brazil and compton and africa etc...dudes walk about with guns every day. Even some parts of london and liverpool so it would seem. Many areas of glasgow gusy carry knifes everyday also.

I grew up in some of the worst areas both here and in the US (including Willowbrook, LA)and spent much of my childhood in the care system, with all the nonsence that implies and that is still no excuse to carry weapons....all you are doing to adding to escalation of knife crime and gun crime in your community.

It is irresponsible and illegal, and should never be deemed as acceptable in a modern civilised society regardless of what you think are justifiable reasons.

right so if you met a fellow adult or old mate who carried a weapon or knife youd cut contact with him pretty sharp? (no pun intended lol)

I just .....

I must ....

Oh never mind.

this guy sums it up:

So I bumped into an old freind from school and when out he showed me his knife he carried for protection. Fair enough he had been in jail for selling drugs and not long out so not really a ''normal'' representitive of society.

But would you find it weird or odd for a person to carry a knife about with them?

I mean its a tough dodgy place out there anyway.

In a town or city, no. But whenever I hike/ski/camp I always have at least 1 knife, normally in the form of a multitool but I have several good pockets knives that would make a good weapon.

Sometimes I have these knives left in a jacket pocket accidnetly when about town. If I am doing a lot of DIY I also tend to leave a mutlitool in a pocket.

Most of my knives and multitools are not street legal in the UK (not sure on the regulations, but I expect the locking blades are a no go, and the length of 1 or 2 is probablly an issue).
I don't carr them for self defense, more liklely to open a bottle of beer/wine, cut some bread and cheese!

No i wouldnt but id be asking WTF is he carrying a knife around for??. Dont really see any reason for carrying one around.

I did this when I was about 12, because it was super cool.

Now though I realise how stupid and reckless it was, and will be making sure my children do not posses such items at such a young age.

Plus it will save all the knife marks in the sofa from dropping it into it from a height lol.

When out on my land and need a knife to cut something - yes

When going to the middle of nowhere and not telling anybody and going down cave systems - Yes, in case I need to cut my arm off

Out and about round town for "protection" - No

Also, isn;t there a great number of people hurt by knives have had their own knife used on them and if they hadn;t taken one then they would have been less hurt?

That is not what I said....anyone who has grown up in the way you imply knows that your friends are your family and you don't cut contact simply because they do something you don't agree with.....I would, and have encouraged them to not carry a weapon and take their life in a better direction, with limited success I admit! Many, too many are no longer with us. I am not longer associated with the culture I spent some of my childhood in, thankfully I had a few people come into my life that steered me in a better direction and I had advantages of my own....however the bonds I made with some of the people in the various homes and hostels I lived in, both here and in the US remain strong to this day....even if a few of them scare the bejesus out of the Wife.....

It is difficult to convey the strength of the bonds you form with people when they are all you have to rely on, especially when you are a child.....

While I can understand why you would want to do this, any responsible potholer knows that you never go caving without letting someone know where you're going and how long you expect to be.

I used to carry a swiss-army knife with me, but only because it was a good multi-tool, and I was always on my bike so if I needed to make any adjustments/repairs I could.

I wouldn't carry one as a weapon - don't see the point, like Greebo said, you're more likely to get hurt with a knife if you have one with you. (Or conversely, you're more likely to accidentally kill someone in a fight and get sent down for murder/manslaughter rather than just giving them a beating). IMO a knife isn't much good as a weapon unless you've been trained to use it properly.

I carry a knife. Albeit it's in my backpack and part of a multi-tool I use for my bike. Doubt I'd get it out in time while being threatened lol.

I've normally got one in the car or in my bag, basically just in case I need to cut something or whittle a toothpick (which was it's last use). I'll probably get one of those multi tools for the same reason.

I guess in the back of my mind I could use it for defence, but I can't see that ever happening.
Unfortunately it's a lock knife so I have to be careful I don't carry it round with me.

Stupid law really, lock knives are safer than pen knives for the person using them, a dealer is hardly going to buy an expensive knife in case he has to bin it.

You're allowed to carry a knife so long as it's blade is below 3 inches long and the blade can fold away, like a pocket knife.
