How would people thousands of years ago possibly be able to predict right down to the nearest day the 'end of the world'?

i am a little skeptic and ive learnt inlife not to be completely naive and keep an open mind. if it ends it ends, at least im happy. the start of another cycle thing is very interesting indeed and it sort of makes more sense now, considering december is a later month it would make sense for it to be the end of the calendar

The problem is Magick, is that you are stating something that even the creators of the Mesoamerican calendars and the Mayan themselves did not ascribe to.
Explain why the long count supplies a continuous calendar count until 4772AD by our Gregorian Calendar.....would that not be rather impossible if the end of the 13th cycle signified the end of the world....not to mention that the previous 13 cycles have not signified anything particularly important or earth shattering, let alone apocalyptic?
This is simply a fabrication designed to encourage media rhetoric and consumerism....if the Mayan were alive today they would be laughing their arses off at the furore over this....while preparing for a great celebration on the day you and those gullible enough to believe the end of days is going to happen.....and almost certainly they would be stocking up on hangover cures ready for 22nd Dec 2012 as well......
