Gaming on a Mac Pro with Windows 7

Bad time to be buying a Mac Pro - the latest iMacs are faster and cheaper in the real world (though dont have the expandibility) and the range is due for a refresh soon.

They're not faster for the things Mac Pros are supposed to be for. Things that properly use all their proper cores.

For your general consumer stuff, sure, they're just as quick, but the Mac pro isn't a general consumer device.

5770 is good but the 5870 is on another level...thats really the way to go if you want to be on the safe side.

You can place another GPU in its place, but I think your warranty is voided (best check as not 100% sure) that would be the cheapest option though. I know the 6870s work with very little problems but Apple dont officially support it until probably next year when their in the new systems.

Wrong...

There is absolutely no voiding of the warranty for putting a non-Apple card in a Mac Pro.

So you could put a 7970 in their if you really wanted.

pretty much, Xeons are designed for more program than gaming though, so it wont be 100% as efficient in gaming compared to say an i5/i7 but il doubt it will have any serious drawbacks.

Wrong again.

The only differences between an i7 and an Xeon chip is ECC support and some other small tweaks.

ECC memory does have a slight reduction in performance but you can fit non-ECC memory and it will work ok if you don't care about it.

So hardware wise, the same performance as a i7.

April would be an excellent time to wait. The SB-E Mac Pro should be out by then and whatever GPUs Apple is intending for it will also be released then.

You could also wait for people to extract the GPUs firmware and flash it to a cheaper PC card!

100% wait IMO.

Completely agree on the above. Also the whole firmware flash will void your warranty, on the GPU you buy at least anyway...If you want the least hassle possible, brace yourself..and wallet until April and see what comes along.
