A few questions about laser eye surgery

Hey all.

My eyes are fairly bad and I am quite useless with my glasses (which I detest) or my contacts. Left eye is -2.75 and right eye is 3.50. Nothing wrong with my eyes other than I am short sighted.

I have a few questions:
1). My eyes are slowly deteriorating. I am changing about -0.25 every 18 months. Surely this means laser eye surgery is a bad idea right now?
2). What about eyes getting worse with age? No doubt when I reach my 40s my eyes will take a serious nose dive. Can you get your eyes 'topped-up'?

I can afford the surgery right now and I spend £30 per month on the more expensive lenses from Specsavers which included contact lense checks. I pay this much because the cheaper lense packages don't permit dawn-til-dusk wearing and dry my eyes out. The lenses are daily ones.

I have read other threads but they are more about asking questions on the eye surgery experience and how much it was.

Thanks :).

1. Go see your optician
2. as above.

Similar to myself, -2.75 in the left and -3 in the right. My eyes are also degrading but every 24 months. I used to wear contacts from the age of 16 until I was 23 then finally decided enough was enough and started to wear my pair of small specs which are quite minimalistic. I had my old prescription for 4 years and notice the sharpness degrading, although I was still legal to drive by a long shot.

I have always thought that eye surgery does not last and you're eyes will still worsen in time (10 years)? I am waiting till my eyes get to -6 (I know some one with -6 in both eyes) before I bother to go for it. I hope by then they have a better solution :)

*edit* Not really a helpful post. You might find your eyes degrade less as you get older.

OP - sorry wasn't meaning to be vapid but surely an optician would be your better option than posting on here?

Each time I go to the opticians it is about £25 (for eye test). Didn't know if they discussed stuff with you for free... I only go once a year.

That is a lot of money. I used to pay £348 a *edit* YEAR *edit* for my lenses. I bought my specs when I was 18 for £180, and only changed the lenses once. I bought a new pair before Christmas though.. lol :)

Ditch the contact lenses, waste of money if you ask me.

You can get re-treated if you develop a prescription after the surgery.

So it sounds like you can 'top up' the vision.

I just don't want to go for it and spend a few thousand on it, to think in 10 years time 'damn my eyes have got worse I wish I had waited!'.

Whilst they are very expensive I really hate wearing my glasses. Really hacks me off how I get up in the morning and can see naff all until I put my lenses in. If I must{/I] wear my glasses then I will, but I will use other means of correcting my vision if I can. Personally I think blowing £2000 on making my eyes perfect is a small price.

Ultralase do free treatments for life. They are usually the priciest of the high street clinics though.

How old are you? I had Wavefront done last August when I was 34 & was told I'd need glasses again for reading in my 40s before the surgery.

They gave me better than 20/20 vision & the novelty still hasn't worn off, I don't think it will. Everything is more vivid & easier to examine..

In work I used to struggle to read information on wallcharts relating to my team, even with glasses. Now I can read wallcharts on the other side of the office!

Driving is a much nicer experience, I was fine before with glasses as far as the law is concerned but now I can see everything so much crisper, I've even been looking at the speeds on other peoples Satnavs! Just have to pay attention & stop looking around :D

I was fairly confident before but I really do think that doing away with glasses & having superb vision (better than 20/20) has made me more confident, maybe because I'm so much more "aware".

Played pool for the first time in ages the other week & was potting like nobodies business! Still useless with the cueball positioning though..

Out running is amazing, I always used to run without glasses for obvious reasons & seeing everything crystal clear is very motivating.

Get a free consultation to see if you're stable enough & see about getting it done!

PS I have a £300 off voucher for Visionexpress if you want it.

bainbridge - Thanks for that! If the consultation is free I suppose I have nothing to lose! I am 24 and I have needed glasses movre than 50% of the time since I was 16. When I worked on a rollercoaster when I was 16 I was dangerous as they never tested my eyes (Iw a sactually dangerous - Not clever in hindsight!).
I accept that when I hit 40 my near sight will go and I will need reading glasses. Right now though all I am is short sighted, but quite a lot short sighted :p.
Is vision express part of optical express?
