Cops In Florida Beat Up 66-Year-Old Man With Dementia

Meh, they ain't gonna do this for no reason - the cops wanted the guy for something! So I have no sympathy to be honest.

Are you for real or just trolling?

There are also many people on this forum show outrage at things which they can do nothing about. Personally I'm fed up of seeing stuff like this posted on the forums. What good does it do?

Before the mass take up of the Internet this would have never been heard of (or in local news at best) so I'm sure posting it worldwide and using it to force authorities to be accountable.

Do you think video from Lybia, Egypt, Syria et al is equally pointless. The Internet is being used as a social tool to shift the balance of power. If you don't like that here's always the back button.

The wonders of the back button never cease. Besides, the cop kicked him in the chest, pinned him down, slapped him around and tried to destroy the video - what difference would the audio make?

What difference would the audio make? Did the officer follow police procedure? What did the old guy say or do? Who knows cos it wasn't available. So why jump to conclusions? We know that UK and US law are completely different. As 4T5 metions, did the officer ask the guy to 'stand down', he carrys on towards the officer. If the officer feels he could be a threat then their law is to take what measures necessary to disable that person. Whether thats with necessary or what appears to be in this case un necessary force then so be it. If the officer is found to be guilty of using un necessary force then he'll be prosecuted under US law. Nothing that anyone in the UK can do about it bashing away on a keyboard.

On a lighter side of things, although in a similar vein, there's an episode of Family Guy where Lois becomes addicted to shop lifting. Joe finds out and chases her, catches her and then proceeds to beat her up, stopping halfway, to say 'sorry Lois I'm just following regulations' or words to that effect regarding how much force he can use when arresting the perpetrator.

Its US law, let them deal with it.

Also there was one of these threads where a girl shot an intruder dead. Was there any question on her using too much force? No!

Are you going to repeatedly ignore the cop slapping the guy around on the floor? do you think that is following procedure? how naive are you?

go on, tell me that's following procedure. the old guy he keeping his arms out - that isnt aggression, that's self defence. What's the cop doing? tell me what the slaps to the face and stomach are supposed to achieve? this is before he tried to destroy the video dont forgot. Please, explain it?

I wouldn't honestly worry yourself about it, it's another country and I bet there are plenty of nutters in the US police force.

No i highlighted in my response that whether he has used necessary or un necessary force then thats his choice. and if he's found guilty of using un necessary force he will be dealt with.

There are rogue officers in every force. Some get prosecuted others dont, but eitherway it doesn't affect you or i so is there any reason to get worked up about it?

Yes there is a reason why we should be concerned. A lot of police officers only get a disciplinary hearing and do not faces charges. This is clear assault and we should not let him get away with a minor suspension.

Quite. That doesnt mean having fun with the guy and slapping him around. You clearly did ignore that when you asked

Did the officer follow police procedure?

procedure doesnt mean slapping the guy around and it doesnt mean trying to get rid of the evidence.

I'm not getting worked about about the assault, nothing i can do about it. You shouldn't be either, that's why i said there's a back button - if you cant have a reasonable debate on this then use it. Otherwise, fine, but please don't try and suggest he's following any kind of procedure as it's absolutely clear he isn't.

There has to be a reason why he did that - I'm sure we're not getting the bigger picture here.

The cop was on his own, facing what he could have thought was a dangerous or armed man. Still probably a bit OTT, but cops are human too.

I've seen similar on Cops and even here in the UK on some of the programs we have and it's fine, so long as it was justified.

Yeah, the guy was so dangerous that he turned off his dashboard camera, because we all know that makes criminals extra dangerous.

That and it is clearly excessive force.

Personally I see very little wrong with the takedown, it eventually takes 4 officers to fully restrain the man, it doesn't seem unreasonable that the officer uses 'strike to stun' tactics before attempting to restrain the guy alone.

Also consider the officer probably has several weapons at his disposal, baton, pepper spray, taser, firearm, non of which he attempts to use

So many videos of police brutality coming out of the US these days, it isn't painting a positive picture of life over there, that's for sure.

think you should do the same then ;)

I'm perfectly capable, thank you.

It doesnt look like the guy put up much of a fight before the second officer showed up. What was that object the second cop used, i thought taser maybe but it doesnt look like it actually comes in contact?

edit: looking at images on google, yeah thats a taser.

I'd say that is a taser the second officer is threatening to use

/edit 'victims' legs don't twitch or spasm though so it's unlikley it was fired

Yeah i don't really understand that. The First cop has the guy pinned on his chest for a full minute before the second cop shows up, and it doesnt look like he's really struggling to restain him. Then second cop threatens with a taser but doesnt use it (agreed, no 'twitch' to suggest it was fired) then 3rd cop comes along at 1:29s, then 4th at 1:37s, than a 5th(!) cop arrives at 2:19s. All to restrain an old guy who didnt need a taser anyway?

You know what, none of it makes much sense lol

I'm struggling to imagine a scenario in which the actions of the police man were acceptable.

Unless the guy was a known cannibal and was whispering 'it's time to suck the flesh off your bones', that it.

The police in America should go through some vetting process and a mental/psychological test of some kind as this isn't the 1st time it's happened and I doubt it'll be the last. On a power trip + armed = not good. Check this out:

I don't know lets say.

@10 yards police man says 'freeze put your hands up'
@5 yards repeats his warning
@striking distance makes descion to restrain possibly dangerous opponent

Yeah, when the elderly man is on the floor in shock and the police offer beats him, that's reasonable force.

He was on the ground with the first strike. That could be considered reasonable force if the officer feels threatened. The rest is entirely unnecessary.

It still doesn't answer the question as to why he was turning off his dashboard cam. Surely you would have it on if you're going to apprehend someone dangerous?
