I've found a desk I want, but according to the GF, it doesn't fit in with the living room colour wise.

It's a light colour, and everything at home is darker. Any chance I could paint it or make it darker?

I'd say that sanding it down a bit and then staining the wood (with a dark stain) is a better option than painting it.

Women

It doesn't match, we can't buy it

When I get a place I'm going to have every wall a different colour and unmatched curtains on purpose :p

You can pick up a bog standard electric sander for just over a tenner. It is best to sand it, otherwise it will look crap and your mrs won't want it in the room anyway and that's you back to square one minus the cash spent.
If you're going to be looking at the desk everyday then its worth doing a good job.

You should sand the laminate with a 240 grit paper before applying any paint. This provides a key for the paint to adhere to and if you miss this out then the new finish will probably end up flaking off.All you need to is to dull down the surface(remove the shine) and your good to go!!

Staining it won't work.

Indeed... I imagine it would be quite difficult to stain plastic laminate!

You can of course paint it but the finished colour will take on the laminate grain pattern, why not get a small test peice similar , clean it with something like sugar soap just to degrease it and apply a couple of coats!

I imagine after 2 or 3 coats of paint (something obviously suitable for plastic not wood!) the pattern of the grain would start to dissapear!

I've seen painted laminate, it looks awful because paint highlights every imperfection and speck of dust. You might get a better finish from spray paint but all the dust in the room is still gong to settle on it.

I'm surprised she's allowing a desk in the living room, but still, if it doesn't look right then find another one. A desk is a desk.

You can buy (2nd hand) real wood furniture for pennies if you look around, you can stain or bleach that any shade you like and it will look fine. Even better, invest a bit in some modern light oak furniture that you will have forever, fits in everywhere and never dates. I've inherited stuff from the 50's that still looks OK.

Laminate is rarely worth buying, one chip and you'll want to bin it, so you'll end up buying the same thing again and again. Dark laminate is worse because the more you have, the heavier the room feels.

He said wooden laminate though, not plastic. I have stained wooden laminate items before (mk1 Escort dash pieces), you just have to be very careful not to sand through the laminate layer.
