Hi people,

After puting off getting a new system last year Im now in the position to do so but my spec list is now out of date (as expected).

Since I last looked and the 2600/2700k was being recommended for a good OC'd system the new Sandy-Es have popped up and Im not really sure how they differ and if they would be much extra use for me.

I'd be using the PC for the following:

- Photoshop work with 12mp/36mp images (CS5 64bit)
- Sony Vegas 10 Pro - Video work with 24mbps AVCHD 1080p footage

Games, not so much.

I also want to run 3 monitors so Im guessing that means an ATI card - whats the best bang for buck that will also help with offloaded video processing work?

Thanks for any advice given peeps :)

Rik

I think you will benifit from the additional cores/threads with video encoding. I think in the long run the additional outlay will pay for itself in time saved.

If you can afford £450 for the 3930k and you don't mind the power consumption of the SB-E chips (read some reviews) then go for it.

Basically , this. With your line of work the additional cores will give you a bit more speed at what your doing , however , in the grand scale of things the 2700k would do a perfectly good job of it also , just a few % slower ( im sure someone will know exactly how much but i dont :) ) .
If money is not an issue you know what to do , if the cpu cost affects everything else i think you would still be delighted with the 2700k .

Thank you everyone for the comments and help :)

I dont want to push my budget too hard at the moment so spending nearly half a grand on a chip alone is just out of my reach. I do video and photo work only part time (couple of times a month) but do completely agree if I was churning video every day then Id spend the extra right now.

So last question here would be : 2600 or 2700 for OC goodness :)

At current prices I'd say 2600K

Well personally I've just splashed out on a 3820 and Asus P9X79 as my i7 920 and Asus P6T Deluxe were showing some signs of age (3 years old), more that I think the motherboard is developing some sort of power fault. In performance terms my i7 920 isn't too bad but it really struggles past 3.8Ghz, my plan is should a IB-E appear later this year or next year then I'll have the setup to drop it in place and splash out a bit more on the processor.

I got the Gigabyte UD3-X79 and the I7-3820 for £390. You wont pay much less for an 2600k and a similar spec mobo. And with the X79 you cant drop in a chip with more cores a couple of years down the line. The IV-E chips should work on the X79 boards too and wont be out till next year - so more life in the board then the regular SB/IB.

Id rather have the OC just now and keep it for a good few years anyway.

Just read this :

"It turns out that the top LGA 1155 processors do not lose any of their appeal against the background of the new Core i7-3820. They not only allow building noticeably more affordable and energy-efficient systems. Their performance appears just as good as that of Core i7-3820 based systems, and in some cases, such as games and regular general-purpose applications, LGA 1155 processors can even outperform LGA 2011 ones. Moreover, Core i7-2700K and Core i7-2600K can also be successfully overclocked and in this mode offer even higher performance than the overclocked Core i7-3820." on Xbitlabs

Yeah was wondering why no one mentioned the obvious....

If you can, wait for a few more weeks.... Z77 mobos are in some places already for sale and hopefully the new intel cpus are due soon also as well as Nvidia cards.

While there is always something new launching around the corner, this is actually right around the corner, so if you can hold off for a bit then it will be worth the wait.
