I've gone with yes, I have no particular desire to attend a baby shower at the moment but there's no real reason why other men might not want to attend if given the option.

Not really - it totally depends on the people....just like with weddings, birthdays, Xmas, stag/hen parties, etc, etc. Our wedding was tiny and cost next to nothing. My stag do was a couple of mates going out for a drink and curry. Our baby shower was a few people who bough food they had made themselves and - yes - a couple of gifts. Some people like to embrace the commercialism, some shun it completely, others (like us) enjoy the social aspect and seeing friends/family but don't buy into the commercialism.
