focus 1.6 zetec mk1 > 2.0 mondeo ghia/ghia x - good upgrade?

Basically as the title says. Was doing back of the fag packet calculations the other day and insurance and fuel costs wouldn't be too much more running a mondeo over the focus.

I like the sound of the mondeo's toys, comfier drive and better interior than the focus - seems a really well specced car for the price. Was considering something like a 2003 or 2004 car for about £2-3k. I'd be part exchanging my focus as well so the actual cost would only be something like £1-1.5k. (Not too sure on the value of my current focus - 1.6 zetec with 60k miles. ~£1.5-2k at a dealer?)

My only concern would be the higher cost of parts on a Mondeo and more things just to go wrong in general, although my focus has been reliable so far and what has gone wrong was cheap to fix.

Anyone else done a similar path or think it would be a good idea ?

Running costs are about the same. Both cars in petrol form are generally very reliable.

What age/year is your Focus?

The Mk3 Mondeo was facelifted around 2004 so I'd recommend getting the revised model. Looks a bit nicer and the interior is much better!

Toys are similar between a top-spec Focus and top-spec Mondeo (I went from a MK1 Focus 2.0 Ghia to a ST220) although not sure about parking sensors.

As you say the Mondeo has a better interior and is more comfortable. It is also much bigger and heavier and the handling isn't as fun as the Focus.

Not had to replace anything on the Mondeo yet so can't comment on the cost of parts. Tyres cost me about £50/corner more though (15" vs 18") for decent ones.

Sorry, forgot to mention the age of my focus. It's a 53 plate (2004). If a facelift is the one to get I may need to wait a while then for one to fall into my budget more. A quick look on Auto Trader seems to suggest finding a good example of a 04 ghia x near to me is a struggle at <3k.

Are you looking at diesel Mondeos? Pretty sure a 2.0 petrol manual Ghia X 2004> would be within budget.

Not sure I'd swap from a similar-aged known-history Focus though...

Why are you specifically wanting the Ghia model? Are you partial to a wood interior?

I don't desire a wood interior that much. :p I think I read that a titanium is exactly the same spec wise, minus the wood? They seem rare though. I want the toys!

Sorry, neglected to mention I'm looking at petrol. I'll probably be doing 8000 miles or thereabouts a year so petrol is perfectly fine. As I say, it's not so much finding examples in budget. It's finding examples within 200 miles or less of me!

Your location will prove problematic I imagine.

This, if you really desire the change for a few goodies then looks like your going to have to wait unless you want to travel. There are good examples of Ghia and Titanium models. The Titanium models aren't rare, they just get snapped up quickly.

Yeah, I kind of had a feeling this would end up being a problem, rossk26. I'm willing to travel but I've set myself a soft target of 200 miles to look at a car. Any more I'd struggle to justify I think. It's just a mondeo. :p

Also I'd be taking my dad as he's a former mechanic. It would take a fair bit of effort to convince him to even come 200 miles to look at a car. We'd have to make a day of it and visit 3 or 4 cars at once I think.

I travelled 309 miles to get my current car. I also went down with my dad too.

I however did get a forum member who lived in the area to check the car over for me...

5 hours! What car was that for? :p

How is the 2.5 V6 btw? Doesn't seem a huge amount more powerful but more torquey I'd assume. Better noise too. Is it too heavy on fuel? Wouldn't want anything less than 25mpg in town and 35 on a run.
