Liverpool holding out for £20m....

They can get f*.

I hope we don't pay that much to get him back, I was all up for Carroll returning on loan and possibly around 12m but I think we should leave it

Ledley King has officially retired. Such a shame, I still believe had he not been blighted by injuries he would have been as good as, if not better, than any English defender of his generation. Probably for the best though, would have hated to see him in a wheelchair, I also remember reading a story about his son asking him why he can't play football with him in the garden after seeing him play for Spurs on TV.

It was the midfield that supplied RvP with all his goals :p

Pff, barely, he made a lot himself. We gave him little over the course of the season

Id take Rooney in midfield. with practice, his passing and vision could be as good as Scholes.

Can't see it myself, doesn't really have the discipline/temperament, concentration or the short passing ability to be a great CM. Certainly he'd never be near Scholes at least.

All Rodgers said was "its no secret we've shown interest in the player, the valuations were worlds apart however so lets leave it at that"

Hardly bullying, the amount of abuse on various forums we're getting over it is shocking considering the antics 'Arry used to get up to and no one batted an eyelid .

True! :D

Triffic player, triffic, love to do a deal for a player like that.... but he's not our player so can't talk about him.

A sports writer for The Daily Telegraph has also said he believes that Man Utd are confident of signing Van Persie.

That's perhaps slightly more reliable than The Daily Mirror article, there does seem to be a bit of weight behind it.

Far from a done deal though when you consider the other clubs that are inevitably involved.

I'd love RvP and Rooney up front, massively superior to both Welbeck and Hernandez, and Berbatov is likely leaving.

It'd be surprising, given the well known post-Berbatov policy of not signing older players. He'd represent quite a risk, assuming his wages would be massive (which is a reasonable assumption to make)... even if they get Berbatov off the wage bill.

It would be surprising, but when you think about it:

  • He's got a good 3 years or more left
  • He may not want ridiculous wages, but we could pay him more than he's on at Arsenal anyway
  • He's proven in the league
  • We need someone to replace Berbatov
  • We've still got an excellent (if not the best - arguable point :p) chance of winning trophies
  • He'd get guaranteed playing time, City will likely opt for Aguero right up top, or Tevez/Balotelli, assuming they stay (even if Dzeko leaves), they wouldn't be able to utilise him as easily

He is considered to be injury prone, but he seems to be over the worst of that now.

Is Italy (Juventus) a more attractive prospect than Manchester United, especially to someone with no Italian ties or links.

I wouldn't spend more than 15m on him. Considering his age, injury record, likely high wages and the fact we already have 3 strikers in the first team any more would be a waste.

Indeed. Hes a great player but at his age I wouldn't want to pay more than £15-20 million considering the wages he would command.

I am happy enough with the squad as long as we have a backup left back and hopefully a new central midfielder. I would be shocked if we bought RvP honestly.

His injury problems are behind him, that doesn't detract from his value anymore, changed his prep and recovery after matches and has been fine for years

I personally just cant ever see Arsenal selling one of their best players to Man Utd

i can't either, i just can't see it happening. unless he does run his contract out and becomes a free agent, even then, i still can't see him going to another pl club, unless him and his missus want to stay in blighty.

You could say that about Clichy and Nasri to city...

No you couldn't, Arsenal had already sold Toure and Adebayor to City, rightly or wrongly they underestimated City and the impact Nasri and Clichy would make to them either that or they just didn't mind strengthening them. Given the history between United and Arsenal Wenger will never sell his best players to SAF

He's spent 8 years of his life trying to win the english premier league, I would say its MORE likely that he would sign for one of the Manchester clubs than go abroad, the only team considered a direct rival that we've also had "problems" with during his time at Arsenal is Chelsea. They were our main rivals, they won the title the year after us, they took Cole off us, they are the local derby team. I'd say he's very unlikely to sign for Chelsea as they were the local rival but Utd/City wouldn't be a problem.

As for UTd, Shami, lol, would be a waste because you have 3 first team strikers, seriously? RVP is miles better than Rooney, RVP is(at the low end) in the bracket of players including Ibra, Messi, Ronaldo, the best of the best around, Rooney isn't even close. Welbeck and Hernandez should be struggling to get games at a midtable team, the fact that they are first team should make you absolutely desparate to sign a top striker, but then that is what's happened to Utd(and this league to a large degree) and why Utd got utterly demolished by Barca. There are great players, and there are English clubs who decide to call half decent players great, and settle for a team filled with average players.

Fact is RVP can go where he wants, getting no money is a very very poor option and refusing to sell to Utd this season just to see RVP see out his contract and join them next year would be, pointless. Better that Utd spend 15-20mil on RVP now, than let Utd have 15-20mil extra to strengthen with AND get RVP on a free.

As for City, he's start ahead of basically any of their strikers, however people seem to be ignoring a pretty important fact. Arsenal couldn't afford to rest RVP, City/Utd/Juve/Real/Barca could rest him, meaning at a "top" club he'd be less likely to get injured, less likely to be overworked, less pressure on RVP. Who says he wants to play 60 games a year, maybe 40 games, less chance of injury, and not having to line up against Stoke and Wigan is a better option?

Age, lol, Drogba was still the most effective striker in the champions league this year, RVP has 4+ years left at the top, and any player can get injured. Then you simply factor in that, without the Arsenal factor he's not that likely to get injured anyway ;)

All utterly irrelevant unless we're going to sell one of the other three, which we're not. No team has 4 strikers that want and can play first team football, that's why Berbatov sat on the bench the whole of last season. United only need a new striker if we're going to sell one of Welbeck and Hernandez. End of story.

Tevez, Dzeko, Aguero Balotelli./.
