Hi Guys,

I run a small video and Photography company, we are now at the point of needing more storage that can be accessed by 2 Mac and a PC with options to add more computers in the future.

Using USB Hard drives only gets us so far and data gets lost and split over drives and only one person can use the drive at once.

So I have a few older computers sat around that are not being used for anything.

I would like to take one of these computer and turn it into a small storage server or simple a NAS system.

Its it simply a case of getting a rade card a few 2tb drives installing in the computer and installing windows server or a NAS OS and plugging into the network?

Thank you for any help
Alex

That or use something like FreeNAS - http://www.freenas.org/ as your OS, and run it from there. But other than that, pretty much as simple as that yes :)

Wow, Thank you for that. I had a guy come to the office last week quoting £3500+ for a basic set up I think as i just need it for storage I will be better off setting something up my self.

Thank you
Alex

If it is just for storage, get yourself a few 2Tb drives, throw in a RAID1 setup(mirror) and install FreeNAS :)

Yer all I need is a place to store files that we can pick up on different computers.

Going to starting looking to order parts if its that simple.

Thank you

If you get stuck.... I would be surprised :p but if you do, just come back on here and there's plenty of people to unstick you :p

yep freenas is the one to install onto a used pc , I even booted from an usb memory stick :-)

Kenneth.

There is also another OS called OpenFiller which does the same, just called different, and looks slightly different, both are as good as each other for what you need though :)

Drobo FS meets your exact needs

Thanks but as I have the old computer already will see if I can use that.

Anyone got a recommendation on a Raid control card?

I have seen a few with 4 ports on, if i want to add more drives later do I just put in another control card?

Thanks again

Alex
