Disabled Pakastani Girl Arrested For Blasphemy

Do you really need an education to know that burning houses down is bad and persecuting disabled children is wrong?

You would be surprised at the level of ignorance in parts of the world where emotions easily override clear analytical thinking with regard to issues.
In this case it is most likely that where this event occured, people were more likely illiterate simple villagers who upon hearing about this event went up in rage demanding persecution without giving time to an investigation where simple facts could be established.

The issue of religion for people is always a very sensitive issue especially in deeply conservative societies, be they christians, muslims, buddhists, jews etc.

No just ban it, no Religious discussion, nothing whatsoever on overclockers, it causes nothing but problems and then all sides are happy.

We don't need it here

Alternatively exercise a little discretion and either not click on obvious religious threads (the word blasphemy is a really good clue for this one) or hit back when you realise it is one? :)

It's nothing really to do with me not wanting them here it's the problems that always appear in religious threads. Why do you think the "No Trolling of religious threads" rule came into play? Because it kept happening on pretty much every single thread. Do you really need a thread to say "Happy Christmas" or "Eid Mubarak" to people on the internet who you don't even know? If you want a proper religious discussion you can easily post in the Speakers Corner and have a proper discussion.

So without the influence of religion you still think these people would be looking at burning down houses and persecuting disabled girls? Also didn't this occur near the capital city rather than some provincial backwater?

This may be taking sensitivity a touch too far don't you think? There really is little excuse for this sort of behaviour. Religion should have little to do with government and nothing to do with determining punishment. Blasphemy laws shouldn't exist.

Well it does have something to do with Islam as the religion she is accused of blaspheming against is Islam. The "It's cultural" argument is a bit weak too as religion both informs and is informed by culture.

The fact that the girl has downs is pretty immaterial, no one should face death or any other penalty for blasphemy.

what is the Sharia penalty for blasphemy?

As far as I am aware and again I stress I have very little knowledge of Islam there are no laws regarding blasphemy in the Quran or Hadith. Blasphemy laws are applied differently from country to country so in some countries it could mean Jail term or even fines.

I do understand that it should not matter whether a person has downs syndrome or not they should not be killed but surely if a normal person goes around burning holy books like the Quran or Bible they should have to face some sort of repercussions as at the end of the day they are offending a large group of people? If a Muslim or Hindu guy went out into the streets of London and started to burn holy books there would also be outrage in the UK.

Surely as individuals we should all have a bit of respect for all religions and beliefs..

I disagree. Just because you don't like it is no reason to ban it altogether. It is easier to just avoid because then it allows those that do want to discuss it still can.

Why though? It's not the original Quran is it, so in effect it's just paper with letters in ink printed on it? I seriously doubt it was done with any sort of intent.

No. Why should religion get special protection? Freedom of expression trumps everything here.

Or death...

No they shouldn't. Why should religion have special protection from any other deeply held personal views? There can be as much outrage as you like but I really don't think anyone should be arrested or punished for burning a book. Burning a book in of itself causes no harm, religious zealots reacting to the burning causes harm.

No, we should have respect for the right to hold a religious belief but it is up to ourselves if we should hold respect for the religion itself. The mysoginy and homophobia at the centre of Catholicism and Islam for example is incompatible with my personal beliefs, why should I repe t those religions? The actions and premises behind Scientology are laughable, should I have respect for it too?

It might just be "plain paper with letters in ink" to many people but to some it represents a whole lot more than just that. Surely we can just respect this and move on? You don’t have to believe anything you don’t want to believe but It is not hard to show a little respect :p

There are loads of things people would like to discuss on this forum but can't so that's no excuse, religion has no place on a computer hardware forum!.

Or keep it to the speakers corner section

This is "General Discussion" which religion can and does fall under. There is very little (that isn't illegal) that can't be discussed, the only things I can think of are medical threads, competitors and moderating decisions.

You can have whatever view you like, if you choose to show respect or not that is up to you, I shall respect your view as long as it does not harm me ;)

The OP started this thread trying to imply that it was religion responsible for the reaction of those people who wanted to burn and kill for blasphemy I just wanted to point out that I Believe it is not because of religion or Islam people are like this, it is because of uneducated illiterate people who do not fully understand Islam and like to jump on a badwagon.

You've missed the point. To that little girl it was probably just something that could be burned. I very much doubt she had any comprehension of the importance of the document she was burning. It's like a kid drawing on the walls or on an important document in your house. It happens all the time. I very much doubt that her intention was to upset the whole community.
