Unfortunately not. Until then it will just be experience vs. experience, which I agree isn't ideal, but I just don't understand the vehemence of the opinions they create. Perhaps you and hurf are driving far harder than I expected and pushing the tyres to their limits, hence exposing their weaknesses. It just doesn't ring true with my own (admittedly more sedate) experience.

You don't like it sliding around, fair enough... A lot of others do... They give just the right amount of grip and slip to have fun in a naturally aspirated version.

That's why people race about them... As Sigma and I have said... It sounds like you could do with a bit of driver training... Not meaning to be rude or anything, but if you really have them stepping out at times you don't expect and your car really is setup properly... It must be your lack of driving experience. Probably as simple as putting the power down just a bit too early.

I had T1Rs on my 220bhp 'charged car and it didn't once step out of line unexpectedly. In fact, I loved them on that car.

As for the Eagle F1s, the way they tramline MX5s is rather annoying.

I am fully willing to accept that I may be at fault, I am not an amazing driver and I do not like sliding at all. I am very tempted to do some driver training one day. It certainly won't be lack of experience, I have been ragging MX5's for over 5 years now, never have I not had the confidence to do it in than I don't have currently.

Fast driving for me is going out with a few super cars at 5am on a summer morning, and driving for 3 hours for a second breakfast with me at the back driving to the red line through country roads to keep up and even being a bit quicker through Cheddar gorge and the like, I have never had any kind of moment with Eagle F1's, now I refuse to even go out like that without changing them.

Maybe I do need to learn to "drift" or "slide" and enjoy that, but I think that's massively stupid to be doing on a public road...

They're bobbins tyres, as has been pointed out, you can get Conti Sport 3's for a few quid more which are better than the Toyo's even at overall cost due to the improved wear rate.

I completely agree. I was told by a few people, not just on here, that they were amazing tyres, when in fact, they are awful in comparison to a truly amazing tyre like the Eagle F1.

Now its "Oh they are supposed to let you slide!" and "What did you expect, they are a budget tyre!"
 
I like how you seem to be brining in comments from people who aren't taking part in this thread and then claiming that we're all advocating the same.

I push all my cars/tyres to their limit... but only when safe, so hardly ever on the public road :(

IMO - it's very good to know the limits of your car - that way if you ever do get in to a sticky situation, you know what you can and can't do.

That's fair enough... but it's also good for when you're not expecting the slide... you have the confidence and reactions that it doesn't matter if it slides, you're ready to catch it without thinking twice...

It's not necessarily about pushing specifically for a slide on a public road, I won't advocate that - but a little wiggle from time to time just makes the drive so much more involving for me.

Pushing the back end out a bit on a wet roundabout etc... great fun... certainly limited fun, only done when I was 100% certain there wasn't anyone or anything in the way. So could hardly be done at every corner.

Although... with the 'charged '5 - I was sliding whenever no-one was looking - that thing was hilarious.

While I was a student - with my first '5... I used to love sticking R888s on the front and the cheapest of the cheap on the rear... I love sliding around :D


As for a bit of training... airfield days are great for open space to make lots of mistakes... ideal if you can get on one with an instructor & they don't cost much either... that's where I started learning :)

People seem to go on like they are Conti-equals for half the price. But you must be careful with 'for the money' because 'for the money' a set of Linglongs with 3mm of tread are 'not bad' if they are 10p each, if you get my point.

Just the same with the RX8 OC saying "get Avon ZZ3s in 10mm too wide size... they feel just as good as the Bridgestones for half the price".

No... no they really don't.

Mine had a pair on the rear when I got it... absolutely terrible and the 10mm over-size made the sidewalls really floppy, to the extent when you were pressing on, it started to feel like the back end was breaking away wayyyy before it really was... felt rather unsafe.

Ended up trying FK452s (got a stupidly good deal on the right size & after a positive experience with them on the scoob - thought why not). Got them for about 2/3 the price of the over-sized ZZ3s... they weren't half bad, especially compared to the ZZ3s! Still wished I'd paid the extra for the bridgestones though :(

A fatal error I seem to have made. Also, some people seem to be saying "for the money" after I had read lots of suggestions of them being "the" tyre to go for.

Hence my thinking that its people who have never had an actual good tyre, thinking they are good.

Same thing with people replacing bushes with polybushes and swearing blind they'll never go back to rubber. HOLY CRAP NEW POLYBUSHES FEEL BETTER THAN WORN OUT RUBBER ONES!!!1

Oh so now there is better rubber, but at twice the price, how does £9 on Conti's double the price? Stop using the 'for an MX5' there's one in this thread denying it and I know two more who can't stand them. Earlier in this thread you said it was fine on your 220 bhp car and now you're saying your going to change them when you upgrade? Also you say they don't suit a Mk3, but there's one in this thread who is happy with them :p
 
It's almost as if taking random opinions of people on the internet with unknown subjectivity and experience isn't a brilliant way to gauge the capability of a tyre :p

Terrible - Kumho KU31s are good for an Elise... despite being terrible on just about every other car.

DC2s are 1200kg+ :confused::confused::confused:

Like I said - link on the Conti's please... I want to buy some at that price.

I never said it was the best rubber available... ffs... re-read my posts.

I'll be going for more sticky because I'm aiming for 350BHP in the new car... if I was around 200 again or lower... I'd have no issue buying T1Rs. They suit MX5s perfectly... in my opinion and a lot of others'.

If you just want grip, I think you're missing the point of the MX5's fun :(
 
I preffered the T1S's but the R's are good on hatchbacks, stuck them on an e36 saloon before and they were fine but it was never really pushed either.
