US official killed in embassy raid in Libya

BBC reporting US embassy stormed in Yemen.

What exactly are they hoping to achieve as all this plays right into the hands of those who made the video in the first place surely.

Yep and most likely why they made it.

25,000 Syrians die (including 500+ children) and Obama virtually says nothing. 1 American dies and all hell breaks loose. Sure they might be completly different events, but it's times like this that highlight the amazing hypocrisy of the US government

How is the self interest of nation states hypocrisy? (Not to mention the US has said an awful lot about the situation in Syria but can do very little about it whilst Russia and China are against interfering).

They give the impression they care, yet do nothing about it. Thousands die and they sit ideally by, yet 1 person dies and they already start sending battle ships to the region.

As for talking about Syria, it is simply that, talking. I believe the last thing Obama said was something to do with "crossing a red line" if Assad used chemical weapons. I mean my God hasn't that line already been crossed? The whole thing is a total joke.

Anyway that's the first thing I thought about when I heard this news story. How fast America gets it's knickers in a twist at the death of it's own and yet seems to have no problem with tens of thousands of innocents dieing

Adlad what planet are you living on?! Syria is an outrage and most of the world has commented on this fact and borderline begged Assad to stop what he's doing. The reason more action can't be taken is that China and Russia won't allow it as they both have interests in allowing Assad to remain in control.

If anyone was to do something it would risk starting a war (probably by proxy) amongst three of the largest powers in the world.

President Barack Obama is harshly criticizing the Syrian government for an attack that killed more than 200 people in the city of Homs. The president’s sharply-worded statement released Saturday aims to reassure the Syrian people.

In some of his strongest language yet, President Obama condemns what he calls “the Syrian government’s unspeakable assault against the people of Homs.”

The written statement uses words like “murdered” and “disdain for human life and dignity.” Mr. Obama asserts that “any government that brutalizes and massacres its people does not deserve to govern.”

He again calls on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down, saying he “has no right to lead Syria, and has lost all legitimacy with his people and the international community.”

President Obama warned Syria on Monday that it would face American military intervention if there were signs that its arsenal of unconventional weapons was being moved or prepared for use.

It was Mr. Obama’s first direct threat of force against Syria, as he has resisted being drawn into the bloody 18-month rebellion.

The two situations are entirely different. There's no point sending warships to Syria. What are they going to do there? Makes perfect sense to send them to Libya, in response to a direct attack on American citizens.

Pretty sure I'm on the same planet as you :)

I know the reason America won't do anything in Syria, I'm not stupid. They haven't got the balls to stand up to China or Russia, of course that's the reason. And that's why I said the whole thing is a joke. If the US government really cared they would do something, or at least do more than they have.

They invade a country that they had no real reason to, which resulted in the deaths of over 100,000 civilians (at least) and now they stand back because China tells them to?

Look at the date on your source. It's at the start of the year before this was what it is now.

The president also tells the people of Syria, “We are with you.”

Yes he is with you... In words

The US have literally done zero to help Syria, except a few words by Obama now and again, his strongest being 6 months ago.

As for the change of policy if Assad uses chemical weapons... Well there are a lot of ways to kill people without using chemical weapons. How many have to die before something is done? 50,000? 100,000? A million?

And you want them to do it again. Insanity.

No, they stand back because they have no mandate to declare war on Syria. Apparently you want another illegal war. That is stupidity of the worst kind.

His strongest words were delivered on the 20th of August, which is not 6 months ago.

The significance of Syria using chemical weapons is that it provides a mandate for international intervention. Currently there is no such mandate, and any intervention at this stage would be illegal, just like it was in Iraq. You are demanding an illegal war, which is ironic considering how you feel about the war on Iraq.

Yes they stand back. For every bit of action in the past decade they've received nothing but abuse and calls that it was illegal and wrong. And prior to this neither China nor Russia veto'd action.

So think for a second, they go in and provoke Russia, China and probably half of the Arabic world. Or they don't. Hmm...what choice are they going to make?
