Anyone went from a 6950 to 7970?

Have a single 6950 which still cuts the mustard in general, am thinking about going to a 7970, is it worth the upgrade, or better of waiting for the 8000 series?

anyone done the upgrade? impressions?

Well obviously you'll get considerably better performance, but if as you say your current card is fine, surely there is no reason to upgrade? I'd wait until you need an upgrade before upgrading!

i went from a 6970 to a 7970 and love the difference in power,in fact i use to have 6970 in crossfire in 3d mark 2011 i would score around 9800 points and with my single 7970 i can hit 10,000 mark! mind you my 7970 is heavily overclocked.

Definitely something wrong with your crossfire setup then. Was the 2nd lane running at 4x?

I also have a 6950 and agree it is currently still powerful enough to manage all of the games I play.

What is the point in upgrading to more powerful hardware when the current GPU you use is sufficient? Save the money for when the next generation of GPUs comes out and buy then. Or you could just simply wait until video games are released that are built on Unreal Engine 4 and upgrade with what is available at the time.

LOL, everything depends on games you play.
Plenty of examples here: if your games are heavily GPU-dependant (CPU usage significantly below 100% and GPU usage almost 100%), so yes - it's worth to upgrade. I presume you've got strong minimum 4 cores above 3 GHz with huge o/c potential.

for me it was a good upgrade my 6970 was not able to run battlefield 3 with everything maxed out at 1920x1200 with good frame rates, my 7970 can with ease.
on top of that i got my 7970 for £230 second hand and sold my 6970 for £175 so for me it was a easy worth the £55 extra.

Still using my unlocked 6950 at 940/1375 at 1080p. Bf3 did dip into low 40's with ultra settings, but then not hard to go into custom and turn msaa down to 2x or off.
This game is so boring I don't even play it now anyway.

Bf3 and metro have been the only games that pushed my gcard, but this might be my last gcard as i don't really have much enthusiasm for pc gaming anymore. I've been into computers since I was in nappies, c64, amiga 500/600, k6 ii, k7,k8, core2 etc. I just feel things haven't progressed much in the last few years, + other obvious reasons which just make me go muhhh can't be assed spending anymore.

One game though that I've only just recently bought is skyrim and i'm really enjoying that.

My housemate uses my old 4870 and a e5300 clocked to 3.6 on a 20'' at 1680x1050, that still played crysis 2 reasonably well.

Lower fps but no stutter so in turn gives a smoother gameplay
