Fined for chucking a apple into a hedge

I dunno where you live but there are plenty of country junctions round here!:p

Aye but being at one that just happens to have a car with a council good in? :o i dunno...I live in the country and its quite uncommon to have anyone behind me at a junction if I'm actually out in the country proper.

What happens if you're walking in the countryside and find some fruit on a tree/bush. You eat said fruit... What do you do with the pip/seed? Is that littering if you throw it on the floor? Even if it was guaranteed that it was going to hit the floor at some point anyway...?

Well first of all i hope theres someone there to report you for theft. :D :p

I may regret this - but what is spidermanning and seagulling?

I'm sure if you do a search there will be dozens of places only too willing to explain in explicit detail but generally speaking I'd say it's one of those situations that if you don't already know you're probably going to be just as happy not knowing.

As for the original story, it's a little bit unclear - if he was in the metaphorical middle of nowhere and threw the apple core out into a hedgerow round a field (for instance) then this fine seems a little bit harsh. If however he was throwing it into someones garden then I can understand why it was more of an issue.

Personally speaking if I'm out walking in the country and I'm eating an apple or perhaps a pear then on occasion I might throw it under a hedge/gorse bush but always somewhere well off the path and not near human habitation. It doesn't happen often and I would always put any other type of rubbish in the bin but on odd occasions I don't see it as an issue, it will either biodegrade or it will become food for other creatures.

Years ago just before Xmas I got stopped for throwing a 'Cigarette' butt out of my car window by Plod, obviously it was just a ploy to pull me over and breathalyse me as it was an early morning close to Xmas, anyway I completely denied throwing a cigarette butt out of my window as it was actually a cigar stub that was thrown, I passed the breath test, my car was all legal etc. so now the copper was trying to get the angle that I was littering, I pointed to the verge/gutter and told him that it was full of dead leaves (Which it was..) and then explained that a cigar, unlike a cigarette has no paper, or filter, it is entirely composed of tobacco leaves and I would be quite happy to argue the point in Court should he so wish (As I honestly could not see any problem with what I had done) I got away with a patronizing 'Don't let me see you do it again..'

I don't see any difference with an apple core, they fall off trees naturally, like leaves and other fruit, but then it's Big Brother UK, any excuse to fine you.

I roll my own ciggies, no filter, and regularly chuck the butts out the window. Next time it gets wet, all you have is a disintegrated piece of biodegradeable paper and some wet tobacco leaves. Hell, I throw them in my own garden and they are gone by the next day.
It's all just wood pulp and leaves - fine trees for dropping theirs!

I live where he lives, and know of the bloke - it was extensively covered in the local rag, and yes, it was a hedgerow beside a field. Not some other bloke's immaculately cut front hedge.

cigarettes , apple cores and such is all quite minor really , its people who throw general waste like crisp packets , drink bottles on the floor that's annoying.

We are a very dirty nation when it comes to littering.

Cigarette butts are equally annoying and dirty.

Hah! You obviously haven't been to many places on the continent, anywhere in Africa, Asia or many places in the rest of the world have you?!

The UK is significantly cleaner than most other places around the world.

Agree with this. But the 'minor' littering quickly adds up when you get a lot of people doing it.

I think the stupidest one I heard was a guy dropping a £10 note from his pocket. It was picked up by a police man, who then proceeded to fine him for littering. The guy obviously didn't drop it on purpose and he would have picked it up himself given half a chance.

You cant put cigarettes with apples and call them both minor lol.

Apples, yes. Anything green that can be eaten by wild life or biodegrades is minor and shouldn't carry a fine.

Cigarettes are just like crisp packets, cans, etc etc. Disgusting and should carry fines.
