Well, my 5850 has pretty much had it, after years of good service (under a very heavy overclock). I've started getting vertical lines and BSOD, so I think it might be time to replace it.

I figure since I was going to upgrade soon enough anyway, I may as well make it worthwhile, but I'm not exactly flush, so I'm hoping my budget of £230 gets me somewhere worthwhile. So far I've been looking at either a 7950 (AMD biased), or a 660.

I game at 1440p, so the extra vram may come in handy one day, and I play a lot of FPS games (BF3 being the big one). I'll also be overclocking the nuts off of this card.

What card would you guys suggest for bang for buck?

7950 all day as you mention you want to overclock the nuts out of it. If your looking to get the 660ti you might as well just get the 7870 as its similar performance when compared and save your self the money.

Do 7950s unlock like the 6xxx series did? Or was that a one-off?

Either way, It looks like it'll be a good upgrade from my dusty 5850. I've underclocked it (well, reduced the overclock lol) for now and it seems to be holding up, so I am now feeling the pain of near-stock performance for a 3 year old card. Maybe I'll relegate it to my "parts for my gf's pc" project.

Think it's just Sleeping dogs Matt. Not particularly interested in it (got too many games to play as it is!) so may flog it on MM or something.

BOUGHT

Card arrived yesterday and I had a quick blast on a few games. Buttery smooth deliciousness (haven't even overclocked it yet) :D Cheers for the advice chaps.

I have the exact same card and it runs my 1440p screen wonderfully.

Mine does 1000/1350 on stock volts, so be sure to try and squeeze some free power out of it :)
