Are screen protectors required for S3? If so which are best?

Hi,

I recently got a Galaxy S3 which I am loving, however after 1 days use I noticed a large L shaped scratch across the screen...

This surprised me as I have never had a case/screen protector on my iPhones in the past and they have lasted 18 months with barely picking up a scratch.

Is the S3 screen known to scratch easily?

If so are there any good/recommended screen protectors for it or is the consensus that all screen protectors are the same?

I think they have the same screen as the Galaxy Nexus, in which case, I wouldn't bother with a screen protector.

In the 12 months that I've had my phone, the screen has a few tiny marks on it. But since day 1 I've kept it in the same pocket as sharp keys, coins etc. I don't bother taking care of mine and it still looks in pretty good nick.
 
If you have a habit of being in dusty or gritty environments they're probably worth it as it's that that kills the screens rather than keys and coins etc.
 
The Gs 3 screen does seem to scratch much easier than other phones. Since you have already got a scratch on it after only one day, then I would definitely be putting a screen protector on!

They are more or less all the same, how good they will be, will come entirely down to how well you apply it. Although get one, which has decent reviews, don't just buy the cheapest, which has no user reviews, generally amazon and ebay are the best place to buy them from.

The only thing that ruins the screen is the feel and it attracts more grease/oil/fingerprints and due to this requires you to wipe it more often.
 
Had mine since launche with nothing on the screen, its just gets put in my pocket with what ever else such as keys. Still looks brand new, except one little mark on the plastic back cover.
 
I never use screen protectors, but I do treat my S3 and previous phones with extreme care. If your not anal like me about your phones screens get one. They do help.
 
I was paranoid about scratching my new S3 after my old Wildfire suffered damage from keys in my pocket so I decided a) I wouldn't put it in a pocket that wasn't completely empty and b) I wanted a good screen protector just in case. Oh and a case for when it falls out of my jeans onto the tiled bathroom floor (again. Luckily only a TINY graze on one corner of the screen, now covered by my case).

After looking at too many videos by that Erica woman I went for the Spigen Ultra Nano. It's very very thin, it's hard and has no surface rippling and causes no rainbows or screen effects. You really have to look for the edge around the camera/button/speaker to see it. Only very slightly more drag I'd say compared with the glass for my greasy fingers. Went on easy with no bubbles or dust.

With my Otterbox Commuter case the chances of it peeling at the edges are practically zero. No need for me to try any other screen protector :)
 
I think they are really worth it and I cant own a portable gizmo without one. Just spending a few £ can save that screen. Let the protector take the hit, peel it off and chuck the next one on.

Ive had one on my Solid Immerse for two years (its a ruggedized cell anyway) but the screen protectors have really saved its display. You cant even tell they are on there if applied properly (do it nice an' slow to prevent air bubbles)
 
If you look after it, scratches are very unlikely. I haven't had a scratch yet in several years with a lot of different phones. I don't think a screen protector is worth it considering they usually look/feel different.

People need to be educated on this though, keys and things aren't what you need to be worried about.

Even tvs? :p Never had a screen protector on any of my devices, or a protective case, the one phone I ruined due to dropping wouldn't have been saved by either anyway, landed screen first on the edge of a rock :(

Maybe I've just had hardier phones than most but I've honestly never scratched a screen, even though I regularly just pop it in my pocket among my keys or loose change. I've scratched the phone body a few times like that, but never a screen.
 
I have to quote Alien vs Predator for this one:

"It's like carrying a condom. I'd rather have one and not need it than need it and not have one!!"

Once they're applied they are pretty much invisible (if you get them on right - this can take some practice though...) so you might as well slap one on and then IF something crap happens to it, it's easy to peel off and stick a new one on - you're not stuck with a big gouge across your shiny new phone!!

Plus they're cheap as chips - I got ten for a couple of quid on ebay and they're brilliant!
(don't go for the ones that go around the camera and sensors though they don't stick properly, go for the ones that are cut out under the camera :) they're easier to apply too!)

I paid a bit more for my screen protectors for my iPhone this time round and got mediadevil ones. Whilst I know I'm unlikely to scratch it, I just really wanted the matte finish and I'm loving it! The quality seems so much better than the really cheap ones.
