My 3 kids (10, 10 & 8) fight over the iPad 3 and Galaxy S3 that I have ... so I am going to get em an android tab each for Christmas. Budget is £180 each for these and they will do the usual games and some educational stuff on it ...

What do you recommend at this price ?

Kindle fire? Nexus? Samsung?

Out of them 3 I'd go for the Samsung because its a great all rounder with performance and cost.

The 7" tabs will cost £128 with the cash back offer.

The nexus has the quad core processor so it will run multiple apps with ease, costs a little more £199 and that's for the 16gb.

The kindle fire I've had a few goes on but when flicking through the menus and when playing games I have noticed it is a little laggy.

you can get the 32gb nexus 7 from cpw for £180 (pcworld do price match if they're both local)

I'd go this route purely due to it being a nexus device which will be both a 'developers' tablet and have updates, meaning better overall support. It's also got access to tegra zone for games. Not to mention it's the best spec of the lot lol

What about the ocuk ones they have on preorder? £90 for a 7" and the screen is supposed to be good. (Kind of a selfish reason I suggest it - I have no idea about tablets and was going to buy some of these myself, when you guys shoot this suggestion down I might learn what to look for in a tablet and why lol!)

I don't think his kids will thank him for one of them.

The Nexus 7 32GB is the only one you should consider and only really bettered by an iPad which is in a different price league. Currently waiting for CPW to get some more stock so I can get my sons one for Christmas :)

If I was to pay the extra and get the kids Nexus 7, I would have them help out with the chores in preparing for xmas (could be just minor tasks that are relatively easy to do). So when the present is given to them on the day, I would make it very clear to them that the Nexus 7 is both a gift, and a reward for their hardwork for helping with preparation for xmas. That way they won't be in the wrong mindset of parents are "obligated" to buy them expensive gift, instead, they would be proud of being able to help as well as value what they earned.

I know some 14 years old's whose parents bought him the top range ipod back then, he kept trying to show-off with it and then it eventually got stolen. Claimed insurance got another one, and he lost it again! The insurance company refused to compensate for the 2nd time.

Bottomline it is ok to get children expensive gift, but at the same time we must ensure they would be responsible for it. If no effort was involved in getting what they want, it could mean they won't know to cherish it.

Just to say I went for the Samsung Galaxy Tab2 10.1 - with the £50 cashback that will do the job nicely! Looking forward to some peace & quiet now!

My youngest can borrow the ipad now & then .. he prefers the PC anyway.
